1. SHORT NEWS

We would like to congratulate Yervant Terzian, the Tisch Distinguished University Professor at the Astronomy Department of Cornell University, and one of the founding members of Hel.A.S., who was recently awarded the Movses Khorenatsi Medal. This the highest award for scientists issued by the President of Armenia and it was personally presented to Prof. Terzian by the President of Armenia last week.

 

We would like to congratulate Dr. K. N. Gourgouliatos, a member of our Society, who was recently awarded a "Centre for Research in Astrophysics of Québec (CRAQ)" Fellowship. Dr. Gourgouliatos has recently moved to the Astophysics and Cosmology group of the Department of Physics at McGill University, where he will continue his work on high energy astrophysics and plasma physics processes.

 

We would like to congratulate Dr. Ioanna Leonodaki, a junior member of our Society, who obtained recently her PhD from the Department of Physics of the University of Patras under the co-supervision of Prof. C. Goudis (University of Patras), Dr. P. Boumis (NOA) and Prof. A. Zezas (University of Crete). The title of her thesis was "Detection and Multiwavelength Study of Extragalactic Supernova Remnants".

 
2. THE ELEVENTH CONFERENCE OF HEL.A.S.

The Governing Council of Hel.A.S. decided that the 11th Conference of the Society will take place at the "Research Center for Astronomy and Applied Mathematics" of the Academy of Athens, from the 9th until the 11th of September 2013. More information on the conference will become available in upcoming newsletters.

 
3. ERASMUS MUNDUS MASTERS COURSE IN ASTROPHYSICS

AstroMundus is a 2-years Erasmus Mundus Masters Course (120 ECTS) in Astronomy and Astrophysics offered by a consortium of 5 partner universities in 4 different countries: Austria, Italy, Germany, and Serbia. Its main objective is to provide top-ranked students with an excellent background in Astrophysics, to introduce them to the world of modern astrophysical research, and foster their future career in this field. AstroMundus students carry out their master studies in at least 2 and up to four of these countries, in a stimulating and scientifically excellent international environment. The official language of the course is English, but students are given the possibility to learn the languages of the host countries by attending language courses at the partner universities. Successful students will be awarded a Joint Master Degree by all partner universities they have visited during the Master studies. Several Erasmus Mundus scholarships are available. The application deadline for the academic year starting in the fall of 2013, is November 30, 2012. For more information visit:

4. THE "ODYSSEUS STUDENTS CONTEST".

The Odysseus contest challenges students between 14 and 18 years old age from all EU countries to develop a project on space exploration using their knowledge, creativity and critical thinking. Students wishing to participate must form a team of 2 to 5 members, with a teacher as a coach and prepare and submit a project in one of the contest’s categories: i) Solar System, ii) Spaceship – global cooperation and iii) Co-evolution of life.
