1. SHORT NEWS

We would like to congratulate Dr. A. Bonanos, who was recently promoted to an Associate Researcher at the National Observatory of Athens.

We would like to congratulate Prof. C. Tsagas, who was recently promoted to an Associate Professor at the Dept. of Physics of the Univ. of Thessaloniki.

We would like to congratulate Prof. A. Zezas, who recently obtained tenure at the Dept. of Physics of the Univ. of Crete.

 
2. THE ELEVENTH CONFERENCE OF HEL.A.S.

We would like to remind our members that the registration and abstract submission for the 11th Confernece of HELAS will be opened on the 4th of February. 3. HORIZON 2020 WORKSHOP ON SPACE RESEARCH

The Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry organises a workshop on Space Science and Exploration in Madrid (18-19 February 2013). The purpose of the workshop is to consult a representative cross-section of the European Space Research community on Space RTD areas that are of potential interest in the next framework programme, and to gather input from the European Space Research community on the Commission's proposal for Space Research under Horizon 2020 and the corresponding implementation strategy. 4. WORKSHOP ON "THE ROLE AND THE ORIGIN OF MAGNETIC FIELDS IN ASTROPHYSICS"

A workshop on "the role and the origin of magnetic fields in astrophysics" will be organised by the Academy of Athens in March 11-12, 2013. The aim of this workshop is to bring together world renown experts who will review the role of magnetic fields in astrophysics and discuss their origin. There will also be a limited number of contributed talks. Registration is free and open to everyone, but in order to encourage discussions, attendance will be limited to about 50 participants. 5. SUMMER SCHOOL ALPBACH 2013, "SPACE WEATHER: SCIENCE, MISSIONS AND SYSTEMS"

The Summer School Alpbach enjoys 35 years of tradition in providing in-depth teaching on different topics of space science and technology. It is organised by the Aeronautics and Space Agency of the Austrian Research Promotion Agency and it is co-sponsored by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the national space authorities of its member and cooperating states. The Summer School 2013 will focus on "Space Weather: Science, Missions and Systems". The School is open to 60 selected young science and/or engineering students and graduates from among the member and cooperating states of ESA. The deadline for applications is March 31, 2013. 6. NEON OBSERVING SUMMER SCHOOL 2013

The 11th "NEON Observing school at the telescope" will take place at the La Palma Observatory (Spain), from July 14 to 27th, 2013. The purpose of the school is to provide opportunity to gain practical observational experience at the telescope. To this effect, the school proposes tutorial observations in small groups of 4 or 5 students, under the guidance of an experienced observer, centered around a small research project and going through all steps of a standard observing program. Some introductory and complementary lectures will be given by experts in the field. The deadline for applications is on April 20th, 2013. For more information you can visit:
