1. SHORT NEWS

The latest issue of Hipparchos (Volume 2, Issue 2) has been prepared by Prof. K. Kokkotas and has just been sent to all members. Check your mailboxes! As usual the issue is also available as a PDF file in the web server of Hel.A.S at:

We would like to congratulate Dr. Loukas Vlahos who was recently promoted to Professor at the Department of Physics of the University of Thessaloniki.

We would like to congratulate Dr. George Voyatzis who was recently promoted to Assistant Professor at the Department of Physics of the University of Thessaloniki.

2. THE 8th HELLENIC ASTRONOMICAL CONFERENCE

We wish to remind all Hel.A.S. members that the registration for submission of abstracts for the upcoming 8th conference of Hel.A.S. is now open and the deadline has been extended to the 31st of May 2007. For more details please visit the conference web page at:

3. JOSO PRIZES TO YOUNG SOLAR PHYSICISTS

The JOSO (Joint Organization for Solar Observations) offers prizes to two young solar physicists for outstanding papers published in peer-reviewed journals. The candidates must have obtained their PhD after Jan 1st 2002 and they should be less than 35 years old. The submitted papers will be reviewed by a committee consisting of: Arnold Hanslmeier, Michal Sobotka, Jean-Claude Vial and Georgia Tsiropoula (members of the JOSO board), which will be assisted by experts in different fields of solar physics.

The papers in ps or pdf format and a short CV, should be sent electronically to the president of JOSO, Prof. Arnold Hanslmeier: arnold.hanslmeier@uni-graz.at. The application deadline is May 20, 2007!

The first JOSO prize is a 1500 euros award and is sponsored by the ROTH Saubermacher Company. The second JOSO prize is a four-year hard-copy subscription to the journal Solar Physics and is offered by the Springer Science and Business Media. The awards will be presented during the third Central European Solar Physics Meeting in October 10-12, 2007, in Bairisch Koelldorf (Austria). The awarded solar physicists should attend the conference. Note that their local expenses to attend the conference will be covered by the conference organizer.

4. UPCOMING ASTRONOMY MEETINGS IN GREECE
