1. Short News

The Society would like to congratulate the recently admitted Ordinary Member Marina Georgiou for having successfully defended her PhD Thesis at the National Observatory of Athens and the University of Athens, under the supervision of Profs. K. Tsinganos and I. Daglis. In the new academic year, Dr. Georgiou will be joining the Mullard Space Science Laboratory of the University College London as a Postdoctocal Research Associate. The Society extends its best wishes to Dr. Georgiou for a prolific career and success in her pursuits.

The Society would like to congratulate two recently admitted Ordinary Members, Drs. Ioannis Liodakis and Georgia-Virginia Panopoulou, for being jointly awarded the 2017 Young Researcher Award of the University of Crete. Dr. Liodakis was honored for his research contribution to the field of Blazar Astrophysics realized during his PhD Thesis, under the supervision of Prof. V. Pavlidou. He continues as an Institute Fellow at the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology at Stanford University. Dr. Panopoulou was honored for her research contribution to the field of Interstellar Medium Astrophysics realized during her PhD Thesis, under the supervision of Prof. K. Tassis. She continues as a Postdoctoral Scholar at the California Institute of Technology. The Society extends its best wishes to both Drs. Liodakis and Panopoulou for a prolific career and success in their pursuits.

2. 3rd ASTERICS Virtual Observatory School

The European Union ASTERICS project is organizing its third Virtual Observatory (VO) School, during 14 - 16 November 2017 at Centro de Astrobiologia in Madrid, Spain. The VO is opening up new ways of exploiting the huge amount of data provided by an ever-growing number of ground- and space-based facilities, as well as by computer simulations. The goal of the School is twofold, namely to (1) expose European astronomers and representatives of the European Strategy Forum on Research Initiatives (ESFRI) to the variery of VO tools and services available today and (2) gather requirements and feedback from them. To achieve these goals, VO experts will lecture and tutor the participants on the usage of VO tools and services. Real-life examples of scientific applications will be given, with a significant fraction of time devoted to hands-on exercises.

Participation will be limited to a total of 45 participants.  The deadline for registration is October 1, 2017, with the deadline for submission of participants' use cases is October 15, 2017. Travel and accommodation support is available for the participants. For more information, contact esm@cab.inta-csic.es. Information about the School can be found here.

3. Research Studentships at the NORDIC Optical Telescope

The Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) invites applications for Research Studentships. The Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) is a modern 2.6-m telescope operated at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos on the island of La Palma in the Canaries, Spain. NOT is the main northern-hemisphere telescope facility for Nordic astronomy and offers excellent image quality, state-of-the-art detectors and instruments, and an informal, friendly working environment. NOT offers unique hands-on training opportunities in modern observational astronomy for Nordic astronomy and engineering students. The NOT Research Studentship programme enables students to spend extended periods at the NOT and take advantage of these opportunities. The deadline for receipt of applications is August 9, 2017. More information is available here.
