  1. SHORT NEWS
  -------------

   Professor Chronis Polymilis (University of Athens), a founding member 
  of our Society, passed away on August 13. The governing council of
  Hel.A.S. sent a wreath to his funeral and would like to extend the
  sympathy of the Society towards his family and loved ones.


  2. NEWS FROM THE IAU GENERAL ASSEMBLY
  -------------------------------------

  -  The XXIVth IAU General Assembly took place in Manchester, UK
   between August 7 and 18, 2000.  During the meeting professor John
   Hadjidemetriou (Univ. of Thessaloniki), who is a member of Hel.A.S. 
   and has also served as Vice-President of our Council for 4 years, 
   was elected President of the IAU Commission 7 (Celestial Mechanics 
   and Dynamical Astronomy).
   On behalf of all members we wish to send him our congratulations.


  3. MEMBERS IN NEW POSITIONS
  ---------------------------

   Dr. Nektarios Vlahakis has recently moved as postdoctoral fellow
  to the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of
  Chicago (USA).


  4. UPCOMING ASTRONOMY MEETINGS IN GREECE

We issue this extra Newsletter, because it has just been brought to our
attention that three positions related to Astronomy/Space Physics have
been announced in Crete and Athens:


CRETE (1 position):
 A new position of "Researcher D" in
                      "Observational Astrophysics"
 has been opened at the Institute of Electronic Structure & Laser of the
 Foundation for Research and Technology in Crete.

 Deadline: 22 September 2000

 Profile: The successful candidate should have experience in using
          optical telescopes as well as acquiring and analyzing 
          optical observations.

 Requirements: Submit an application, detailed CV and publication list

 has been opened at the Institute for Space Applications and Remote Sensing of
 the National Observatory of Athens.

 A 3-year position of "Researcher D" concerning
                  "Satellite mobile communications"
 has been opened at the Institute for Space Applications and Remote Sensing of
 the National Observatory in Athens.

 Deadline: 15 September 2000
