The Society would like to congratulate Prof. Nikos Kylafis who was recently elected Vice President at the IAU Commission J1 “The Spectral Energy Distribution of Galaxies” for the 2018-2021 period. The society extends its best wishes to Prof. Nikos Kylafis for further successes in his professional pursuits. The Society would like to congratulate George Vasilopoulos who recently completed his PhD at the MPE & Technical Univ. of Munich (Germany). His dissertation is titled “Study of highly magnetised accreting neutron stars in the Magellanic Clouds and beyond” and it was completed under the supervision of Dr. F. Haberl and Prof. J. Greiner. The Society would like to congratulate Alexandros Psychogyios who recently completed his PhD at the University of Crete. His dissertation is titled “Galaxy morphology in different environments” and was completed under the supervision of Prof. V. Charmandaris. The Society would like to congratulate Kalliopi Dasyra who was recently appointed Assistant Professor at the Department of Physics at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The Society extends its best wishes to Prof. K. Dasyra for further successes in her professional pursuits. |
| 2. IAU 100 |
|
In 2019, the IAU will celebrate its 100th anniversary. The council of Hel.A.S. unanimously accepted the proposal of Prof. Kanaris Tsinganos, member of our society and coordinator of the IAU100, to collaborate in the celebration of this milestone that will take place in Greece. As a first step, the IAU100 activities commonly accepted to be advertised by HelAS, will be posted on the site of our society. |
| 3.IAU Astronomy translation network |
| The Astronomy Translation Network is a joint project of the Astronomical Union Office for Astronomy Outreach and the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan in Tokyo. Its goal, aligned with one the IAU’s many missions, is to combine the efforts of volunteer translators and astronomers to make astronomy available in as many languages as possible.Currently, the Greek Language Team is composed of three volunteers, and more volunteers (with backgrounds either in translation or astronomy) are being recruited. | 4.Call for Letters of Intent for the new IAU Office |
| IAU intends to establish the Office of Astronomy for Education (OAE) focused on providing training and resources for using astronomy as a stimulus for teaching and education for elementary to high school level. IAU intends to establish soon the new (OAE) through an international call for proposals leading to a by-lateral agreement, similar to the ones signed for the other three IAU Offices already in operation: the Office of Astronomy for Development (OAD), the Office for Astronomy Outreach (OAO) and the Office for Young Astronomers (OYA). |
