1. SHORT NEWS
————-We would like to congratulate Prof. Christos Goudis (Univ. of Patras),
a founding member of Hel.A.S., for being elected as the new director of
the Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the National Observatory
of Athens.
The Proceedings of the last Hel.A.S. Conference in Samos have now
been published in a CR-ROM, which has been mailed by the LOC to all
participants. Check your mailboxes!2. MEMBERS IN NEW POSITIONS
—————————Mr. Alexis Louridas has recently moved from the Nuffield Radio
Astronomy Laboratories at the Univ. of Manchester, to the Electronic
Engineering Laboratory at the Univ. of Kent at Canterbury (UK).Dr. Nektaria Gizani has recently moved from the Universidade da
Madeira to the Observatorio Astronomico de Lisboa, in Lisbon
(Portugal).3. JOB OPENING
————–A new tenured track position at the level of “Assistant Professor”
or “Lecturer” in the field of “Astrophysics” has opened at the
Department of Physics of the University of Thessaloniki. The
application deadline is May 8, 2001.

—————————————————–The European Association for Research in Astronomy (EARA) has been
designated by the EU as a joint Marie Curie Training Site, offering
fellowships for postgraduate students. The second call for applications
of PhD candidates, who will spend 3 to 12 months at one of the EARA
institutes, is now available at:http://www.iap.fr/eara/mcurie.html
The deadline for applications is June 1, 2001.
5. BLOIS CONFERENCE ON “FRONTIERS IN ASTROPHYSICS”
————————————————–Fellowships are available for young european scientists wishing to
participate in this conference, which will take place from 17 to 23 June,
2001. The conditions are: age < 35 at the date of the conference and nationals of EU member states or associated states. THE ASTROVIRTEL PROJECT --------------------------- The ASTROVIRTEL Project, supported by the European Commission, offers the possibility to European Users to exploit the ST-ECF/ESO Archive as a virtual telescope, retrieving and analysing large quantities of data. The Second Call for ASTROVIRTEL Proposals has now been announced. Detailed instructions for the submission of proposals within the Second Call for ASTROVIRTEL Proposals can be found at: http://www.stecf.org/astrovirtel/ The deadline for submission is June 15th, 2001. 7. STUDENTSHIP FOR WORK ON SOLAR OBSERVATIONS --------------------------------------------- A pre-doctoral student, interested in participating in an on-going research project concerning the analysis of ground and space-based solar observations, is requested to contact: Dr G. THE 2001 CONFERENCE OF HEL.A.S. ---------------------------------- As a reminder to all Hel.A.S. members, the deadline for registration and submission of abstracts for the upcoming conference of Hel.A.S. is May 15th 2001. Requests to the LOC for travel support should also be submitted by the above data.
