The Council of the Hel.A.S. would like to wish to all members of the Society and their families a Happy, Healthy, and Productive New Year.

1. SHORT NEWS

We would like to congratulate Dr. Antonis Manousakis, who has recently defended his PhD at the University of Geneva (Switzerland) under the supervision of Dr. Roland Walter. The title of his dissertation was: "Accretion in High Mass X-ray Binaries".

 

We would like to inform you that most of the oral and poster presentations during the previous conference of our Society are now linked to NASA/ADS. The remaining presentations will be linked by the end of this month. In addition, the invited review papers in all previous issues of "Hipparchos" are also linked to NASA/ADS. Please let us know for any mistakes you may notice.

 
2. MEETING OF THE GOVERNING COUNCIL OF HEL.A.S.

The Governing Council of Hel.A.S. met on the 19th of December 2011, to discuss various issues related to organizational matters, as well as upcoming activities of the Society. All members are strongly encouraged to read the minutes of this GC meeting, which will soon be available online at the end of the web page:

During the meeting it was decided that the next (30th) General Assembly (GA) of the Society will take place on Friday the 29th of June 2012 at the Department of Physics of the University of Athens. During this GA, the new Governing Council of the Society for the 2013-2014 term will be elected. By the end of January 2012 all Members will have received by e-mail the official announcement regarding the elections. According to Article 29 of the Constitution, all ordinary members of the Society who have no outstanding membership fees may nominate themselves or other ordinary members for the Council. The nominations have to be returned to the Secretary of the Society by February 29th 2012. The call for nominations as well as the necessary forms will soon be available online at the "News & Events" section of the web pages of the Society. More information on the General Assembly and the elections will become available in future newsletters.

 
3. ERASMUS MUNDUS PHD IN RELATIVISTIC ASTROPHYSICS

The International Relativistic Astrophysics PhD is a newly established international Doctorate Program in Astrophysics that has been selected by the European Commission as an Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate. Currently there is a call for 9 PhD positions available with funding in Relativistic Astrophysics. The PhD studies will be performed in one of the 13 institutes of the consortium. 4. SPACE ASTRONOMY SUMMER PROGRAM (SASP) AT STScI

The Space Astronomy Summer Program runs from mid-June to mid-August, and is designed for upper division undergraduates with a strong interest in Space Astronomy. Students work individually with STScI researchers and staff on research projects that might include data reduction and interpretation, software development, scientific writing, preparing data for public releases. The program affords students the opportunity to attend lectures on a variety of exciting topics related to space astronomy, the Hubble, and James Webb Space Telescopes. The SASP is aimed at college undergraduates between their junior and senior years. However, they also accept exceptional students in earlier years and beginning graduate students. If you think you would benefit from their program, you are encouraged to apply. The program is open to students from the US and other countries.
