1. Short News

We would like to congratulate our member Matthaios Katsanikas who was elected as associate researcher at the Research Center for Astronomy and Applied Mathematics of the Academy of Athens, in the research field of dynamical astronomy. The Society extends its best wishes to Dr. Katsanikas for further successes in his professional endeavors.

We would like to congratulate our member Stavros Akras who was elected as associate researcher at the Institute for Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Applications and Remote Sensing of the National Observatory of Athens. The Society extends its best wishes to Dr. Akras for further successes in his professional endeavors.

The GC of HelAS would like to congratulate Prof. Manos Chatzopoulos, currently Assistant Professor at Louisiana State University (USA), who was recently selected for the highly competitive DOE CAREER award entitled "Modeling The Nucleosynthetic Imprint of Stellar Merger Phenomena”. The award also provides funding for $750,000 towards the support of his research group.

Due to the corona-virus outbreak most international conferences are canceled or postponed. For this reason, the travel grand support of the second half of 2020 is postponed to the next year.

 
2. 38th General Assembly of Hel.A.S.

This is the final reminder by the Governing Council of Hel.A.S. that the next, 38th General Assembly of the Society will take place on Friday, July 17, 2020. Due to the covid-19 pandemic, the General Assembly will take place at the amphitheater 'Aristarchos' in order to ensure the necessary social distances between participants. The amphitheater is located in the same building, just one level below, the Section of Astrophysics, Astronomy and Mechanics of the Physics Department at the University of Athens, which is the Society's legal base. The Assembly will convene at 09:30. If no quorum is achieved at this time, the Assembly will adjourn and reconvene at 13:30, regardless of quorum, as per Article 42 of the Society's Constitution. Moreover, at 12:00, at the Aristarchos amphitheater, there will be a lecture given by Prof. Vassilis Charmandaris, who is candidate for President of our Society.
The General Assembly will conclude with the Society's elections for the next Governing Council, mandated for the term 2020 - 2022. We have send to All Ordinary and Junior Society members besides the Assembly's formal agenda, all election-related instructions and guidelines. The Governing Council wishes to reiterate that Ordinary and Junior Members who wish to participate in the election, either in person or via an absentee ballot, should be in good financial standing. This means that membership fees up to 2019 should be covered by the election date. Both the Society's future and standing rely on a robust election turnout; for this reason, Members are strongly encouraged to fulfill this financial requirement that will validate their voting rights.

3. New astrophysics faculty position at the University of Ioannina

We inform the opening of a new astronomy faculty position at the level of full or associate professor, at the Section of Astro-geophysics of the Department of Physics of physics University of Ioannina. The application deadline is on July 14, 2020.

 
4. Open call for a PhD position at Hvar Observatory

We inform that an open call for a PhD position at Hvar Observatory for research related to the propagation of Coronal Mass Ejections. For more info please check here.

 
5.National Committee for Astronomy

The Society informs its Members that a new composition of the Greek National Committee for Astronomy (GNCA) has been announced by the Ministry of Development and Investments. The GNCA plays an important advisory role to the government in regards to Astronomy and Astrophysics. In addition, it represents the country to the International Astronomical Union (IAU).

The Society is also very pleased to announce that all Committee members, regular and substitute, are Ordinary Members of the Society.

The regular Committee members are Spyros Basilakos, Iossif Papadakis, Manolis Plionis, Nikolaos Stergioulas and Despina Hatzidimitriou. The substitute Committee members are Manolis Georgoulis, Andreas Zezas, Alceste Bonanos, Vasiliki Pavlidou (current Hel.A.S. Council Member) and Pablo Reig. The new GNCA President is Spyros Basilakos. The current Committee members can be also found here, while an up-to-date GNCA website is under development.

The Society congratulates and extends its best wishes to the new GNCA members for a successful service and advancement of Astronomy and Astrophysics in Greece, alongside with the Society. The Society will continue to keep its Members informed about latest developments, announcements and publishable deliberations of the Committee.

7. PhD Fellowships at the Institute of Astrophysics - FORTH

The Institute of Astrophysics - FORTH announces the availability of PhD fellowships in select areas of observational extragalactic astrophysics under the supervision of Dr. Tanio Diaz Santos (tanio@ia.forth.gr). The student/students will be registered in the PhD program of the Dept. of Physics of the Univ. of Crete and are expected to commence by the end of 2020 or early 2021. The net monthly fellowship stipend is 750 Euros. For more information please check here.

 
8. Alpbach Summer School 2020 postponed

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the Summer School Alpbach 2020 on “Comparative Plasma Physics in the Universe” is postponed to 2021, maintaining the same programme. The new dates for the 44th Summer School Alpbach 2021 will be July 13 – 22, 2021. All applicants will be informed about the postponement directly by the organizers very soon. Students who have applied by April 30, 2020 could leave their applications open for next year if they are still interested in participating.

 
9. Student and Postdoctoral Research Opportunities Abroad
The list below may be refreshed or updated with further established lists:
  • The Collaborative Research Center "Neutrinos and Dark Matter in Astro- and Particle Physics, SFB1258 organizes a seminar series, the 'Virtual Seminar on Multimessenger Astronomy', relevant for PhD students. Check the preliminary schedule: here.
  • Postponed to Summer 2021. The "Applied Galactic Dynamics Summer School" wivll take place at the Center for Computational Astrophysics, Flatiron Institute, New York, (July 6th-August 14th). Interested PhD students may obtain more information here.
