1. SHORT NEWS

Vassilios Barbanis, professor emeritus at the University of
Thessaloniki, and a founding member of Hel.A.S., passed away on
June 15th 2006, at the age of 80. The Governing Council of Hel.A.S.
presented a wreath at his funeral and would like to extend its
condolences to his family on behalf of the Greek astronomical community.
We would like to congratulate Prof. Vicky Kalogera for being
promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in the Dept. of Physics
and Astronomy at Northwestern University, USA.
2. FORTHCOMING ELECTIONS OF Hel.A.S.
------------------------------------
As announced in the previous extra newsletter, due to the prolonged
"sit-in" (katalhpsh) by the University students, the Council of HelAS
decided to postpone the General Assembly and elections of our Society
which were originally scheduled for Tuesday, June 20 2006, at the
Section of Astrophysics, Astronomy and Mechanics of the University of
Athens. The new date of the elections will be Friday September 22nd
(the Fall Equinox!). All other details, such as hours/programe/invited
Hel.A.S. talk by prof. J. Papamastorakis remain as previously announced.
3. JOB OPENINGS
---------------
A new promotion-related position at the level of Researcher C in
the area of "Observational Astrophysics in the optical with emphasis
in the structure of galaxies" has opened in the Institute of
Astronomy and Astrophysics of the National Observatory of Athens.
The application deadline is 6 July 2006. For more information

A new promotion-related position at the level of Researcher C in
the area of "Astroparticle Physics" has opened in the Institute of
Astroparticle Physics of the National Observatory of Athens. The
application deadline is 6 July 2006. For more information

4. ESA JOB OPENINGS AT STScI
----------------------------
The European Space Agency provides scientific personnel to the Space
Telescope Science Institute (STScI) as part of its collaboration
with NASA on the Hubble Space Telescope. There are currently several
openings for astronomers funded by the Space Telescope Division,
Directorate of the Scientific Programme of ESA, through a contract
with the STScI. These scientific positions are three-year term,
renewable contracts with benefits commensurate with those of AURA
employees at the STScI. The application deadline is 15 July
