1. SHORT NEWS
-------------
- The Governing Council of Hel.A.S. wishes everybody a HAPPY NEW YEAR.
Let's hope that 1999, will lead us healthy, happy and prosperous to the
NEW MILLENNIUM.
- The web server of Hel.A.S. is two years old. Even though we suffered
a bit last year (maybe due to the "terrible twos" syndrome!) we hope
that the server will continue to improve and provide useful information
to the Hellenic astronomical community. If you have any comments or
suggestions on the contents/presentation of the web server, please
send your input to the webmanagers.
2. Hel.A.S. PRIZE FOR THE BEST Ph.D. IN 1998
-------------------------------------------
The deadline for the "Best Ph.D." prize has ended with the end of 1998.
Here we would like to remind everybody the scope of the prize, by
re-issuing the message published in our previous Newsletter. The winner
will be announced after the next meeting of the Council.
"The Council of Hel.A.S., in its last meeting on Nov. 13, decided to
establish a
HELLENIC ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY PRIZE
for the best Ph.D. in Astronomy. The prize is foreseen to be granted
annually and will cover one calendar year. The selection procedure
and the amount of money connected to the prize will be decided yearly
by the Council of Hel.A.S. The prize will be awarded to active members
of the Society, which have successfuly defended their Ph.D. thesis
during the calendar year of the award.
For 1998, the Council of Hel.A.S. has decided to offer the sum of
100.000 drx.
The recipient will be selected by the Council. Please note that this
is an award. It is not a scholarship. Therefore no "application" is
involved. All members of the Society and other colleagues (Ph.D.
supevisors in particular) are strongly encouraged to bring to the
attention of the Council of Hel.A.S. any candidates of this year's
prize, by sending details to the Secretary of Hel.A.S., Dr. H. Varvoglis
(varvogli@astro.auth.gr). Full address can be found in the "Members'
Directory of the Society: http://www.astro.auth.gr/elaset. The Secretary
can also provide further details for the prize."
