 1. SHORT NEWS
 -------------

    We would like to conratulate our colleague, Panos Patsis, who has been
 awarded a fellowship of the G.G.E.T. program adressed to "greek-speaking
 scientists living abroad". Panos will soon start working at the "KEAEM"
 of the Academy of Athens.
 

 2. I.K.Y. SCHOLARSHIPS FOR 1999
 -------------------------------

    The National Scholarship Foundation (I.K.Y.) has announced the 1999
 programme for graduate student scholarships and postdoc positions in
 Astronomy. There are 6 scholarships for graduate students. Fields: 
 "Astronomy" (1), "Astrophysics" (2), "General Theory of Relativity" (1),
 "Observational Astronomy" (1), Near Earth Environment (1). The postdoc
 position (1) is in the general field of "Astronomy and Astrophysics".
 Please note that application deadline is February 19.
 The written examinations for the graduate student scholarships will take
 place in Athens (Arsakeion School at Psychiko) on April 2-3. The 
 selection for the Post-Doc position will be undertaken by the Executive

 3. NEW Ph.D. DEGREES AWARDED
 ----------------------------
 
  The Hellenic Astronomical Society would like to congratulate the
 following Junior members for obtaining their Ph.D. degrees in the second
 half of 1998.
 
 - Moustakas Leonidas, Ph.D. University of California - Berkeley, USA
  (now a postdoc at Oxford University, U.K.)

 - Siopis Christos, Ph.D. University of Florida - Gainesville, USA

 - Gizani Nectaria, Victoria University of Manchester - Jodrell Bank, U.K.

 According to the constitution of Hel.A.S. all Junior members obtaining
 a Ph.D. degree become Ordinary Members in the next General Assembly of
 the Society.


 4. 4th HELLENIC ASTRONOMICAL CONFERENCE
 ---------------------------------------

    The 4th Astronomical Conference of the Hellenic Astronomical Society
 will take place in the island of Samos on Thursday-Saturday, 16-18
 September this year. A web page has been setup in the Society's home

 Invited talks and 2 parallel sessions will cover most fields of Astronomy
 and Astrophysics, such as: "Dynamical Astronomy and Celestial Mechanics",

 and other galaxies", "High Energy Astrophysics", "Cosmology and
 Relativity", "History and Infrastructure of Astronomy in Greece". For
 further information please check the Conference's web page, which at the
 moment is under construction, but as time passes it will be enriched with
 useful information
