1. SHORT NEWS

Dr. Adamantios Stavridis recently moved from the Univ. of Thessaloniki, to a postdoctoral research associate position at the Department of Physics of Washington University in St. Louis (USA).

The minutes of the 26th General Assembly of Hel.A.S. as well as those of the 1st meeting of the newly elected Governing Council which took place on June 20th 2008 are now available online. All members are strongly encouraged to read those minutes available at the end of the web page:

2. ASTRONOMY EVENT IN 2008 DIMITRIA FESTIVAL OF THESSALONIKI

As part of the Dimitria Festival, Imperial College Astrophysics, the Friends of Astronomy Club of Thessaloniki and the Observatory of Thessaloniki are organizing a three-day public astronomy event. Funded by the Municipality of Thessaloniki the goal of the event, which will take place on 26-28 September 2008 in Thessaloniki, is to familiarize the public with Observational Astronomy, its history and the latest developments by bringing together the foremost UK and Greek astronomers. This event is open to anyone interested in learning about Observational Astronomy and especially university students keen to pursue graduate studies in the field. 3. TEMPORARY ASTROPHYSICS TEACHING POSITION AT THE UNIV. OF IOANNINA

A new temporary teaching position (P.D. 407) in Astronomy has become available for academic year 2008-2009 at the Department of Physics of the University of Ioannina. The successful candidate is expected to teach the Department's elective courses on 'Solar Physics', 'Observational Astrophysics' and 'Galaxies - Cosmology'.The deadline for submission of letters of intent is September 5, 2008. 4. ESA RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS IN SPACE SCIENCE

The ESA Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Programme is aimed at providing young scientists, holding a PhD or the equivalent degree, with the means of performing research in space science. The programme is open to suitably qualified women and men. Preference will be given to applications submitted by candidates within five years of receiving their PhD. Candidates not holding a PhD yet can also apply, but they must provide evidence of receiving their degree before starting the fellowship.

Appointments for an ESA fellowship are for two years, after which Fellows normally leave ESA. The fellowship in space science is tenable at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, the Netherlands, or at the European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) in Villafranca del Castillo, Spain. The Fellowship Programme does not currently grant fellowships in other institutions outside of ESA.

The fellowships are open to nationals of ESA Member States (which includes Greece) and to nationals of states adhering to the PECS cooperation scheme. The deadline for the 2009 call for applications is 1 October 2008. For more details visit the dedicated web page at:
