1. SHORT NEWS

We would like to congratulate Dr. Marios Karouzos who was recently awarded the Reimar-Lust prize of the Max Planck Society for his PhD research. The prize is accompanied with a 2 year scholarship at MPIfR in Bonn. Dr. Karouzos will move in October to the "Center for the Exploration of the Origin of the Universe (CEOU)" of the Seoul National University in S. Korea for a post-doc position.

We would like to congratulate Ms Angeliki Kiakotou who was recently awarded her PhD from University College London (UK) under the supervision of Prof. Ofer Lahav. The title of her dissertation was: "Neutrino masses from cosmological probes".

We would like to congratulate Mr Emmanouil Chatzopoulos, currently an Astronomy PhD student at the Univ. of Texas at Austin, who recently received the 2011 Univ. of Texas at Austin Outstanding Thesis Award for the Masters thesis he completed in 2010. His thesis was entitled "Discovery, Observations and Theory of Over Luminous Supernovae and Peculiar Transients" and it was performed under the supervision of Prof. John Craig Wheeler.

2. THE 10th HELLENIC ASTRONOMICAL CONFERENCE

The final programme has now been announced on the Conference's web pages. We would like to remind our members that they can still register for the Conference until August 10th 2011 (although they cannot submit an abstract for a presentation any more). More information is available at:

3. HEL.A.S. 2011 ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP FEE DUE

We would like to remind all members of Hel.A.S. that the deadline for the payment of the 2011 Annual Membership Fee is August 31, 2011. All members of the Society who have not yet paid their Membership Fee for the past year should do so as soon as possible. Members who are not certain about their dues, or wish to receive an invoice in order to charge their membership to a grant may contact the Treasurer, Prof. N. Vlahakis (treasurer@helas.gr).

As it has been mentioned in the past, the preferred method of payment is online via the secure server of the Bank of Pireaus, using a credit card or a direct bank transfer. For more details on this, as well as information on other methods of payment, please review the payment form listed bellow, or contact the Treasurer:

4. OPTICON CALL FOR PROPOSALS

The call for observing time at night time telescopes supported by the OPTICON Trans-National Access will open on 1 August 2011 with a deadline of 1200 UT on 31 August 2011. The semester is centred on February 2012 to July 2012, but there are small variations at some telescopes to accommodate their normal semesters and maximise scheduling flexibility. Proposals must meet certain EU and OPTICON rules for formal eligibility concerning team membership. Broadly speaking, the PI and at least half of the Co-I’s must be working at Institutions from EU member states or EU associated countries but which are outside the country/ies which own the telescope. Please also note the prohibition on projects which could be applied for by the PI using the national mechanisms open to them. If in doubt, contact the Project Scientist for clarification. Not all of the telescopes in the access programme are offering time in this call. More information is available at:

5. UPCOMING ASTRONOMY MEETINGS IN GREECE
