 1. SHORT NEWS
 -------------

  The next issue of Hipparchos will be published by early September, in
 order to be available for the Samos's meeting. Please consider submitting
 any news, articles etc. you have on time. For more information
 please contact the editor, Dr. Xenophon Moussas (xmoussas@cc.uoa.gr).

  Recently, we were informed that the phone numbers of several faculty
 members of the Department of Physics at the University of Athens have
 changed. Please check your online record in the web pages of Hel.A.S. to
 verify whether the information listed there is correct. If you spot any
 errors please let us know.


 2. IMPORTANT DEADLINES
 ----------------------

  The deadline for Registration and Abstract submission to the 4th
 Astronomical Conference of the Hel.A.S. is JUNE 30!
 
   
 3. HEL.A.S. PRIZE FOR BEST PH.D. IN ASTRONOMY 
 --------------------------------------------- 

  The Council of Hel.A.S. would like to congratulate Markos Georganopoulos
 for becoming the recipient of the 1998 Hel.A.S. prize for the best
 Ph.D. in Astronomy. 

  Dr. Georganopoulos completed his Ph.D. at the Department of Astronomy of
 Boston University, USA, in 1998. He is currently a postdoc at Max Planck
 Institut fur Kernphysik in Heidelberg, Germany. A sum of 100.000 drx. 
 complements the award.


 4. NEW Ph.D. DEGREES AWARDED
 ----------------------------

  The Hellenic Astronomical Society would like to congratulate the
 following Junior members for obtaining their Ph.D. degrees in the first
 half of 1999.

 - Konstantinos Kleidis, Ph.D. University of Thessaloniki, Greece

 - Eleni Chatzichristou, Ph.D. Leiden University, The Netherlands

 - Christos Efthymiopoulos, Ph.D. University of Athens, Greece

 - Maria Charsoula, Ph.D. University of Athens, Greece
 
 - Elenh Papadakh, Ph.D. University of Athens, Greece

   According to the constitution of Hel.A.S., all Junior members obtaining
 a Ph.D. degree become Ordinary Members in the next General Assembly of
 the Society.
 

 5. TRAINING SITES AND DEVELOPMENT HOST FELLOWSHIPS

  Dear Sir/Madam,
  
  We inform you that the Call for the Marie Curie Training Sites and the
  Marie Curie Development Host Fellowships (dedicated exclusively to
  Less Favoured Regions) has been launched on 11/6/99 and the deadline
  for receiving Proposals is 13/10/99.  Favoured Regions) has been

  13/10/99.  It is an action line under the Improving Human Research
  Potential Programme (IHP) within the 5th EC RTD Framework Programme.
  The Guide for Proposers is available on the INTERNET
  (http://www.cordis.lu/fp5/src/programmes/htm, then you choose the IHP
  Programme and the Marie Curie Host Fellowships). The Proposal Form for
  these fellowships is the same form as that which is used for Industry
  Host Fellowships.
  
  Please find attached the Call for Proposals for the above action line.
  
  We strongly encourage applicants to download all the information from
  the Internet and, if necessary, we will provide photocopies of the
  information package. We emphasize as well that the the Greek academic
  community should take full advantage of the Development Host Fellowships
  offered exclusively to the Less Favoured Regions of the Community of
  which Greece is one in its entirety (Objective 1 region).
