1. SHORT NEWS

We would like to congratulate Dr. Ioannis Daglis (National Observatory of Athens) who was recently elected as Professor of Space Physics at the Department of Physics of the University of Athens.

We would like to congratulate Dr. Evangelia Tremou who was recently awarded a three year postdoctoral fellowship in the Yonsei University Observatory of the Yonsei University in S. Korea, to study jets from radio loud AGN using the Korean VLBI Network (KVN).

We would like to congratulate Dr. Alexios Liakos who has recently defended successfully his PhD at the University of Athens under the supervision of Prof. P. Niarchos. The title of his dissertation was: "Study of selected eclipsing variable stars of EA, oEA and EB type– Absolute parameters, evolutionary status and orbital evolution".

 
2. THE 30th GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF HEL.A.S.

During the 30th General Assembly (GA) of Hel.A.S. which took place on June 29, 2012 the President of the Society N. Kylafis summarized the activities of HelAS during the last two years while the Treasurer, N. Vlahakis, presented a detailed account of the finances. The Secretary, I. Papadakis, introduced to the GA the applications of two Junior members, namely Dr. Alexios Liakos and Dr. Nikolaos Nanouris, who had requested to change their membership status from Junior to Ordinary Members. The GA unanimously approved the changes of membership status.

 
3. THE ELECTIONS OF HEL.A.S.

In the elections that followed the 30th General Assembly, the members of Hel.A.S. voted for the President of the Society, as well as for the new Council and Auditors for the 2012-2014 term. Of the 200 ordinary and junior members, a total of 88 eligible ballots were collected. The results of the elections were:

Candidate for President of HelAS:

  • Kylafis Nick [70 votes]

Candidates for the Governing Council (6 elected):

  • Anastasiadis Anastasios [22 votes]
  • Bonanos Alceste [34 votes]
  • Efthymiopoulos Christos [22 votes]
  • Papadakis Iosif [37 votes]
  • Tsiganis Kleomenis [24 votes]
  • Tsiropoula Georgia [17 votes]
  • Vlahakis Nektarios [38 votes]

Candidates for Auditors (3 elected):

  • Christopoulou Eleftheria-Panagiota [22 votes]
  • Patsourakos Spiros [30 votes]
  • Zezas Andreas [30 votes]

Nine of the ballots received by mail were not used since no proof of the identity of the sender (such as a xerox copy of some form of ID) was included in the brown envelope containing the sealed ballot of the member. The remaining 79 ballots, contained five (5) blank votes, while four (4) votes were not counted since they were found irregular. Based on these results and according to the Constitution of Hel.A.S. Prof. N. Kylafis will be the President of the Society for the 2012-2014 term. Dr. A. Anastasiadis, Dr. A. Bonanos, Dr. Ch. Efthymiopoulos, Prof. I. Papadakis, Prof. K. Tsiganis, and Prof. N. Vlahakis, will be the members of the Council for the same period, while Prof. E. Christopoulou, Prof. S. Patsourakos and Prof. A. Zezas will act as Auditors.

 
4. JOB OPENING AT THE NATIONAL OBSERVATORY OF ATHENS

Applications are invited for (i) a 2 to 3-year postdoctoral research position and (ii) a 3-year PhD position, on characterizing massive stars in the Milky Way and in nearby galaxies at the National Observatory of Athens, Greece. Applicants with previous experience in optical and infrared spectroscopy, photometry, and the field of massive stars are particularly encouraged to apply. For more information visit:

5. IMPRS FOR ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS AT MPIfR

The International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) for Astronomy and Astrophysics (a collaboration of MPIfR, University of Bonn and University of Cologne in Germany, is offering a number of funded PhD positions. The PhD course is limited to three years. The IMPRS is open to students from all countries. Applicants must have (or are about to obtain) a degree equivalent to the German Diploma (e.g., a Master of Science degree including a Master Thesis) in Physics or other related field in Natural Sciences.
