1. SHORT NEWS
-------------
The second circular on the 4th Hellenic Astronomical Conference has
been sent to all Hel.A.S. members. For more information please visit
the web page of the conference, found in the last section of this
newsletter.
The next issue of Hipparchos will be published by early September, in
order to be available for the Samos's meeting. Please consider submitting
any news, articles etc. before August 15. For more information
please contact the editor, Dr. Xenophon Moussas (xmoussas@cc.uoa.gr).
Recently, we were informed that the telephone numbers of several faculty
members of the Department of Physics at the University of Athens have
changed. We take the opportunity to ask all members to check their online
record in the web pages of Hel.A.S. in order to verify whether the
information listed there is correct. If you spot any errors please let
us know.
We would like to congratulate our colleague, Dr. Nikolaos Caranikolas,
who has been promoted to an Associate Professor in the Department of
Physics at the University of Thessaloniki (Section of Astrophysics,
Astronomy and Mechanics). The position had been advertised in the
Newsletters #9/10 of November/December 1998.
2. SOLAR ECLIPSE 1999
---------------------
As most of us know already, the last eclipse of the millennium,
visible throughout central Europe, takes place on August 11th. Even though
the eclipse is only partial when viewed from Greece, the event is still
worth observing, since its magnitude from Greece will be between 75%
(Crete) and 95% (Orestias)Furthermore, it is more probable that the sky
will be clear in Greece than if you took a plane to visit the areas north
of Paris, or near Munich...
The best time to view the eclipse in Greece is:

Mag = the percentage of the solar diameter blocked by the moon

3. NEW Ph.D. DEGREES AWARDED / UPDATE
-------------------------------------
The Hellenic Astronomical Society would like to congratulate the
Junior Member:
- Xilouris Emmanouel, Ph.D. University of Crete, Greece
who also obtained his Ph.D. degree in the first half of 1999.
We apologize for not including him together with the other Junior
Members in the previous newsletter. However, this was not our only
mistake in that announcement. In another minor typo we included in the
list Dr. Eleni Papadaki, who, even though received her Ph.D. from the
University of Athens, is not a member of Hel.A.S. (at least not just yet...)
According to the constitution of Hel.A.S., all Junior Members
obtaining a Ph.D. degree become Ordinary Members in the next General
Assembly of the Society.
4. JOB OPENINGS

The Institute of Ionospheric and Space Research of the National
Observatory of Athens invites applications for a position at the level of
"Researcher D" in the field of "Satellite systems with emphasis in
telecommunications applications".
