1. SHORT NEWS

We would like to congratulate Ms. Maria Petropoulou, a senior graduate student at the Univ. of Athens, who has been awarded an Einstein Postdoctoral Fellowship to continue her research in Theoretical Astrophysics at Purdue University (USA).

We would like to congratulate Mr. E. Chatzopoulos, a senior graduate student at the Univ. of Texas at Austin (USA), who has been awarded the Fermi Postdoctoral Fellowship to continue his research in Theoretical Astrophysics at the Univ. of Chicago (USA).

We would like to congratulate Dr. Ioannis Kontogiannis, who has recently defended his PhD at the University of Athens, under the supervision of Prof. X. Mousas and Dr. G. Tsiropoula. The title of his dissertation was: "The role of chromospheric fine structure on the formation of the magnetic canopy and the propagation of waves".

The first paper which presents results from observations from the 2.3 m Aristarchos telescope was accepted for publication in MNRAS (Boumis & Meaburn, 2013). The publication also received a "News and Press" announcement from the Royal Astronomical society (for more details, you can visit: http://www.ras.org.uk/news-and-press/224-news-2013/2223-new-greek-observatory-sheds-light-on-old-star).

2. THE ELEVENTH CONFERENCE OF HEL.A.S.

We would like to remind our members that the registration and abstract submission for the 11th Conference of Hel.A.S., is now open. You can register and submit your abstract by visiting the respective pages in the Conference's web site (http://www.helas.gr/conf/2013/register.php and http://www.helas.gr/conf/2013/abstract.php

3. THE HIPPARCHOS NEW ISSUE

The new Issue of "Hipparchos", the official newsletter of the Hellenic Astronomical Society, has been posted on the web site of our Society (www.helas.gr/hipparchos). It will be available for collection from our members during the forthcoming Conference of the Society in Athens. Members who will not be able to attend the Conference may contact the secretary of Hel.A.S. (secretary@helas.gr) and request to be posted to them.

4. FP7 FUNDING FOR THE "GLOBAL MONITORING FOR ENVIRONMENT AND SECURITY" (GMES) ACTIVITIES

The European Commission (EC) and the European Space Agency (ESA) have concluded an agreement on the delegation of budget implementation tasks to ESA for the GMES Space Component within the FP7 specific program "Cooperation" and its theme "Space". ITTs funded by the EC or co-funded by EC and ESA are open to all FP7 participating countries. Further information, as well as a consolidated list of the "Invitations to Tender" (ITTs) published so far, can be found on the CORDIS space page: http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/cooperation/space_en.html)

5. THE SEVENTH IRAM SUMMER SCHOOL

The 7th IRAM 30 m summer school will take place on September 13-20, 2013 in Pradollano near Granada, Spain. The school is aimed at attracting new astrophysicists to current and future single-dish mm-, submm-, and far-infrared facilities. Young scientists with little previous experience in mm-astronomy are encouraged to apply. The school is limited to about 40 students, who will be selected on the basis of their interests, CV, and references. The school lasts for one week, with six days of about 4 hours of lectures per day, leaving ample time to prepare, conduct, and reduce observations at the 30 m telescope. The registration deadline is June 15, 2013. For more information, please visit the following web page:

6. THE "LEA" PROGRAM FOR SUMMER STUDENTS

Leiden Observatory and ESA welcome applications for the inaugural edition of the LEAPS program. LEAPS is an opportunity for students with an interest in astronomy and astrophysics to perform a 10-12 week summer research project in collaboration with a research scientist from Leiden Observatory or ESA. The program is open to all students not currently engaged in a Ph.D. program, and in particular students at the senior-undergraduate or masters level, who are enthusiastic about research in astrophysics. Students will be selected for the program based on their academic achievements and research potential. Projects begin in June 2013 and end before mid-September 2013. Details on the application process can be found in LEAPS

7. PhD POSITIONS AT SISSA

SISSA invites applications for PhD positions in Astrophysics. PhD students are trained with Lectures (first 6 months of the PhD course) followed by research work, participation to international collaborations, conferences, observational projects. The students are selected yearly by means of an entrance examination held in Trieste. At the end of a three- or four-year course of study and research, students are admitted to the final examination to obtain the Ph.D. degree, equivalent to the Italian "Dottore di ricerca". The application deadline for the next academic year is 29 March 2013. For more information visit:

8. CALL FOR SUBMISSION OF PROPOSALS FOR THE COPERNICUS MEDAL

The Copernicus Gesellschaft e.V., exclusive partner of Copernicus Meetings & Publications (see www.copernicus.org), invites the international community of the geo- and space sciences to suggest appropriate candidates for the Copernicus Medal. This award will be presented annually and for the first time in 2013, the year of the 25th anniversary of the Copernicus Gesellschaft e.V. The Copernicus Medal recognizes ingenious, innovative work in the geosciences, the planetary, and space sciences, in particular of colleagues being still in the midst of their scientific career. The suggestions will be assessed by an interdisciplinary committee and the award will be presented at a special commemorative event organized at the University of Goettingen, Germany. Proposals should be sent by e-mail to copernicus.medal@copernicus.org, by 1 April 2013.
