1. SHORT NEWS |
We would like to congratulate Yervant Terzian, the Tisch Distinguished University Professor at Cornell University (USA), who was recently awarded the 2013 Anania Shirakatsi medal by the President of Armenia Mr. Serzh Sargsyan.
We would like to congratulate Prof. Vassilis Charmandaris, who was recently elected Director of the Institute for Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Physics and Remote Sensing of the National Observatory of Athens.

2. The 11th CONFERENCE OF HEL.A.S. |
We would like to remind all members of the Society that the deadline of the abstract submission for the 11th Conference of Hel.A.S. is approaching. Please visit the web page of the conference and submit your abstract before July 8, 2013. The list of invited speakers, and other relevant information, will also be announced on the same web site around the middle of June.

3. NEW MEMBERS OF HEL.A.S. |
During the 31st General Assembly of the Society, which will take place during the 11th Hellenic Astronomical Conference, new members of the Society will be elected. Junior members who have received their PhD the past year will also be moved to the Ordinary status. This is a once in a year event as new members, and change of membership status, can only happen during a General Assembly. We would like to request from all members of the Society to inform any individual who they believe would be interested to join Hel.A.S., and our Junior members who need to change their membership status, to submit his/her application to the Secretary of the Society before July 31, 2013. 4. BEST PHD AWARD - REMINDER |
We would like to remind all members of the Society of the “Best PhD Award” competition for the years 2011-2013. Any Ordinary or Associated member of the Society can propose a candidate for the competition. Proposals should be sent to the Secretary of the Society until the first week of August at the latest. The proposals will be evaluated by the Hel.A.S. council, who will announce the results in late August/early September 2013. The award recipient will be given time for an oral presentation in the Society’s conference in September 2013, and will receive financial support for the participation in an international conference. 5. JOB OPENINGS |
The Department of Physics of the University of Crete has two (promotion related) openings at the level of Full Professor, in the area of "Observational Astrophysics". The application deadline is July 29, 2013. More information (in Greek) is available here.

6. ESO RESEARCH STUDENTSHIPS PROGRAMME |
The ESO research studentship programme is open to students enrolled in a university Ph.D. programme in astronomy or related fields. Students accepted into the programme work on their doctoral project under the formal supervision of their home university but, for a period of between one and two years, they go to ESO to work and study under the co-supervision of an ESO staff astronomer. Studentships may be hosted either at ESO Headquarters in Garching (Germany) or at ESO Offices in Santiago (Chile). The closing date for applications this year is 15 June 2013. 7. VATICAN OBSERVATORY SUMMER SCHOOL 2014 |
The Vatican Observatory announced the 2014 Summer School in Observational Astronomy and Astrophysics, on "Galaxies: Near and Far, Young and Old". During the course of the school, students will present a short paper on their research or the research of their home institution. Field trips to visit sites of historical interest to astronomy will be included. No formal course credits will be given, but certification of satisfactory completion of the course will be supplied.
