 1. SHORT NEWS
 -------------

   During a special session of the 4th Hellenic Astronomical Conference
 of our Society, which was held in Samos on September 18 1999, the official
 "christening" of the new 2.3 m telescope of the National Observatory 
 of Athens. The name of the telescope will be "Aristarchos". First light 
 in the new site on Mt. Helmos (Aroania) is expected in 2001. For more

 2. 4th CONFERENCE OF HEL.A.S.
 -----------------------------
   As you already know, from September 16-18 Hel.A.S. organised the 4th
 Hellenic Astronomical Conference in the island of Samos. Over 100
 colleagues (of which 80 registered properly) from 12 countries
 participated in the relaxing atmosphere of the island. During the 
 Conference 72 "contributed" and 4 "invited" papers were presented. The
 "contributed" papers were distributed among various fields as follows: 
 -Dynamical Astronomy 10
 -Solar, Planetary and Space Physics 19
 -Stellar Astrophysics 15
 -The Galaxy and other galaxies 7
 -High Energy Astrophysics 6
 -General Relativity and Cosmology 7
 -Infrastracture and History of Astronomy in Greece 8
 During the Conference the award for the "Best PhD in Astronomy for 1998 
 among the junior members of HEL.A.S. was presented to Dr. M.  
 Georganopoulos (Max-Planck-Institut fuer Kernphysik), who gave an
 exciting talk about Blazars (the topic of his PhD).


 3. NEW MEMBERS OF HEL.A.S.
 --------------------------

  Six new members were elected during the last General Assembly.

 - Tziotziou Konstantinos, Observatoire de Paris, France, (Ordinary Member)
 - Vlahakis Nektarios, University of Crete, Greece, (Ordinary Member)

 4. JUNIOR MEMBERS MOVING TO ORDINARY STATUS
 -------------------------------------------

   The following thirteen Junior members have obtained their Ph.D. 
 since the last General Assembly of 1997. Therefore, they were promoted 
 to the Ordinary membership status:

 5. MEMBERS IN NEW POSITIONS
 ---------------------------

  Dr. N. Gizani has moved to a Postdoctoral Fellowship position at the
 University of Madeira, Portugal.


 6. JOB OPENING
 --------------

  An Associate Professor position has been opened at the "Department
 of Rural and Surveying Engineering" of the National Technical
 University of Athens in the area of "Astronomy, with emphasis on
 Geodetic Astronomy".
