The Society would like to extend its Members best wishes for a Joyous, Healthy and Productive New Year. The Society, following the mandate by its Members and General Assembly, will continue to respond to present and future challenges and implement its vision for the benefit and global visibility of the national astronomy and astrophysics community.
The Society would like to congratulate its Ordinary Member, Dr. Kalliopi Dasyra of the Physics Department of the University of Athens, for receiving a national 2016 L'Oreal - UNESCO prize for Women in Science. The citation comes in recognition of Dr. Dasyra's remarkable work in black holes and their role in galactic evolution. More information is available here.

2. Core Establishment and Support Actions of the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation
|
In late December 2016, the newly established Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (HFRI) launched a host of announcements aiming to fill key functional positions and to support PhD students and Postdocs. The current dissemination forum of these announcements is the News Section of the General Secretariat for Research and Technology (GSRT - see here). Among others, these announcements refer to:
- Candidacies for HFRI Scientific Council Members: more information can be found here, while the deadline for applications is January 25, 2017.
- Call for interest for participation in the HFRI Scientific Council: more information is available here, while the deadline for applications is January 26, 2017.
- Evaluation process for the PhD student proposals: more information is available here.
- First HFRI call for postdoctoral research proposals: more information is available here, while the deadline for applications is March 10, 2017.
- Call for interest for the selection of the HFRI Director: more information is available here, while the deadline for candidacies is February 28, 2017.

3. Two (2) Professorship Positions at the University of Thessaloniki |
The Official Government Gazette (ΦΕΚ) of November 11, 2016 (Third Issue, No. 1143) announced the opening of an Assistant Professorship position at the Department of Physics of the University of Thessaloniki. The position's topics are Theoretical Astrophysics or Cosmology. The successful applicant is expected to carry out his / her duties by means of analytical and numerical methods in fluid dynamics and / or magnetohydrodynamics. The deadline for applications is January 18, 2017. For more information, interested candidates can contact the Department of Physics of the University of Thessaloniki.
The Official Government Gazette (ΦΕΚ) of November 11, 2016 (Third Issue, No. 1143) announced the opening of an Assistant or Associate Professorship position at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Thessaloniki. The applicable position topics can be Harmonic Analysis, Geometrical Analysis, Theory of Differential Equations, Theory of Potentials, Theory of Operators, Complex Analysis or Functional Analysis. 4. Onassis Foundation Scholarship Programs for Helenes for the Academic Year 2017 / 2018
|
The Onassis Foundation has announced scholarship programs for Hellenes for the academic year 2017/2018 for graduate and doctoral studies in Greece and abroad. The deadline for application submission and relevant supporting documentation is February 28, 2017. More information is available here.

5. Call for Young Researchers' Support Proposals by the Hellenic Ministry of Education
|
The Hellenic Ministry of Education has announced an invitation for proposal submissions in the framework of the operational program "Development of Human Resources, Training and Lifelong Learning" under the theme "Support of Researchers with an Emphasis in Young Researchers". The Program is sponsored by the European Social Fund (ΕΣΠΑ). The deadline for applications is March 1, 2017, while detailed information can be found here.

6. Postdoctoral Research Opportunities Abroad
|
A number of international postdoc opportunities in astronomy, astrophysics and space physics have been announced. These include the following openings:
- Two (2) Postdoctoral Research Associate positions in Solar Physics at the University of Sheffield, UK. Notice that the deadline for applications is imminent, January 3, 2017. For more information, potential applicants should contact Prof. Robertus Erdelyi, at robertus [at] sheffield.ac.uk
- Research Fellow, Space Environment and Radio Engineering Group of the University of Birmingham, UK. More information can be found here, with the deadline for applications being January 8, 2017.
- Postdoctoral Scientist with Interests in Planetary Space Physics at the Institute of Space Physics, Uppsala, Sweden. The application deadline is January 26, 2017, while more information can be found here.
- Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Solar ALMA Project at the University of Oslo, Norway. The application deadline for both positions is January 31, 2017. More information is available here.
- George Ellery Hale Postdoctoral Fellowship in Solar, Stellar and Space Physics at the University of Colorado, Boulder, USA. The deadline for applications is January 31, 2017 and the review of applications will start on February 1, 2017.
