 1. SHORT NEWS

 -  The Council of Hel.A.S. would like to wish you Merry Christmas
  and a Happy and Healthy New Year.

 -  We would like to congratulate our colleague, Dr. Demosthenes Kazanas
  of NASA/GSFC, who has recently been elected as "corresponding member" of
  the Academy of Athens.

 2. IAU MEMBERSHIP
 -----------------

  The Greek National Committee for Astronomy is the official representative 
 of Greece to the International Astronomical Union. Consequently, it is
 authorised to propose, at each General Assembly, greek astronomers as 
 candidate members of the IAU. 

  According to the GNCA Newsletter, GNCA is currently considering
 applications from greek astronomers who wish to join IAU. It will form
 its proposal to the IAU by the end of 15 January 2000, since the next IAU
 General Assembly will take place in August 2000.

 3. JOB OPENINGS
 ---------------

 -  A position of ``Researcher A'' has opened at the Research Center for
  Astronomy and Applied Mathematics of the Academy of Athens.

  The deadline for applications is January 15, 2000.

 -  INTERSECURE Logic Ltd is seeking to employ two ADA programmers 
  (one junior* and one senior**) in Brussels/Belgium. The ideal 
  candidates would also have some experience in C++ and HP-Unix systems. 
  The assignment has initial contract duration of one year but it is 
  renewable and can  become a permanent port.

    *Junior is a person with 6 months ADA experience.
   **Senior is a person with 2 years ADA experience + 2 years other
     development experience.

 4. POSTDOCS/PHDs IN GRAVITATIONAL ASTROPHYSICS
 ----------------------------------------------

  - European Network for Research on Sources of Gravitational Waves.

  As part of its current Research Training Networks (RTN) programme, it
 is expected that the European Commission will provide three year
 funding for a collaborative research network dedicated to the study of
 sources of gravitational waves.

   As part of this programme, it is planned that approximately seven
 three-year postdoctoral positions and three three-year predoctoral
 positions (studentships leading to a PhD degree) will be available in
 the institutes participating in the network.

 5. JENAM 2000
 -------------

  The next Joint European and National Astronomy Meeting, entitled
 "European Astronomy at the Turn of the Millenium", will take place
 in Moscow between May 29 and June 3, 2000.
