1. Short News

The Society would like to congratulate Ordinary Member Spiros Vasilakos and collaborators for earning a honorable mention for their Essay in 2017 Gravity Competition, hosted by the US Gravity Research Foundation. Their Essay is entitled "Measuring the Effects of Loop Quantum Gravity in the CMB Data" and will be published in a special issue of the Int. J. Mod. Phys. D. The Society extends its best wishes to Dr. Vasilakos and colleagues for this prestigious distinction.

The Society would like to congratulate Ordinary Member Konstantinos Gourgouliatos for being recently elected Assistant Professor at the University of Durham in Durham, UK. Prof. Gourgouliatos will assume his duties at the start of the next academic year. The Society extends its best wishes to Prof. Gourgouliatos for productivity and success in his future endeavors.

The Society would also like to congratulate Junior Member Michalis Kourniotis for having successfully defended his PhD Thesis at the University of Athens, under the supervision of Dr. Alceste Bonanos and Prof. D. Hatzidimitriou. The Society extends its best wishes to the graduate for a prolific career and success in his pursuits.

 
2. Update on Hel.A.S. Functions: the 13th Hel.A.S. Conference
The 13th Hel.A.S. Conference is fast approaching. As already announced, the meeting will be held in the Cultural and Conference Center of Heraklion, Crete, between 2 - 6 July, 2017. Please make sure to check the meeting program for updates, as the near-final session map and detailed listing will appear shortly.

Attendees who have not yet arranged their trip and accommodation in Heraklion are strongly encouraged to act as soon as possible, as the number of accommodation options decreases in view of the beginning of this year's tourist season. For venue and accommodation options, participants can look here.

In addition, participants are reminded of the opening public outreach talk, to be held at the Basilica of St. Mark on Sunday, July 2, at 20:00. The lecture will be delivered by Prof. N. Kylafis, a Founding Ordinary Member of the Society.
 
3. Call for Expression of Interest to Organize Symposia and Special Sessions at EWASS 2018

The Call for Expressions of Interest to organize Symposia and Special Sessions at the European Week of Astronomy and Space Science (EWASS 2018) is now open. The deadline for proposal submission is July 14, 2017. EWASS 2018 will take place in Liverpool, United Kingdom, between 3 - 6 April 2018. The meeting is organized at the Arena and Convention Centre (ACC) of Liverpool by the European Astronomical Society (EAS), in collaboration with the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS). 4. Student and Postdoctoral Research Opportunities Abroad
The following announcements have come to our attention for this month:   
  • PhD Position on Exoplanet Transit Modelling. The Institute of Planetary Research in Berlin, Germany, explores the origin, evolution and development of planets, their moons, asteroids and comets of our Solar System and other planetary systems.This position stands under the auspices of the German Space Agency, DLR. Deadline of applications is June 20, 2017, with the earliest starting date being September 1, 2017. Detailed information and instructions on the application package can be found here.
