1. Short News

The Society would like to congratulate the Ordinary Member George Balasis for his recent promotion to a Director of Research at the Institute of Astronomy, Astrophysics,Space Applications and Remote Sensing of the National Observatory of Athens. The Society extends its best wishes to Dr. Balasis for further successes in his professional pursuits.

The fifth annual ESAC Data Analysis and Statistics (EDAS) workshop at ESA center, Madrid, will take place on October 8 to 11, 2018. Details can be found here or contact Ordinary Member Yannis Zouganelis.

2. The Next Hellenic Astronomical Conference

The Council of the Hel.A.S., at its latest meeting of September 11, 2018, unanimously approved the selection of Volos, Thessalia as the location of its fourteenth (14th) Astronomical Conference. The meeting dates are July 8 - 11, 2019. The conference's local organization will be managed by the University of Thessaly while the meeting venue will be determined and announced in due time.

 
3.ATTRACT call for proposals in partnership with ESO
ATTRACT is a new initiative that will bring Europe's fundamental research and industrial communities together, and which aims to foster the next generation of detection and imaging technologies. The European Southern Observatory is a partner in the ATTRACT project. The call for ATTRACT opened on 1 August 2018, and applicants (organizations) have to submit their concept notes by 31 October at 23:59 CET.
The total funding for projects is €17 million, with €100 000 of seed funding for each selected project. This funding comes from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. More information can be found here
 
4. Student and Postdoctoral Research Opportunities Abroad
The list below may be refreshed or updated with further established lists:
  • PhD position in astrophysics -ERC consolidator grand "ASSESS" The Institute for Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Applications and Remote Sensing (IAASARS) of the National Observatory of Athens invites applications for 1 PhD position on identifying and characterizing evolved massive stars in nearby galaxies in the framework of the ERC consolidator grant titled "Episodic Mass Loss in Massive Stars: Key to Understanding the Explosive Early Universe" (ASSESS).   • AHEAD school on 'X-ray and multiwavelength surveys, 19-23 November 2018, MPE Garching. The School aims at providing young astronomers with the specific theoretical and practical skills to successfully exploit the current and future generation of large surveys. We will include in-depth discussions of both high-energy experiments and multi-wavelength surveys across the entire electromagnetic spectrum.To this end, world class experts in several fields will deliver lectures and conduct hands-on sessions, including analysis of real catalogs data. Students will have the opportunity to interact with renowned scientists in a high motivating environment. More information can be found here.
