2. 14th Hellenic Astronomical Conference
The 14th Conference of Hel.A.S. took place in the second week of July. The meeting was attended by 102 registered participants affiliated with institutions from 11 countries besides Greece. The snap national elections that were held on Sunday, July 7, forced the Organizing Committee to reschedule the Sunday events for Monday, July 8. The Conference also sponsored events in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the International Astronomical Union, including four public outreach talks. We were impressed by the high level of conceptual understanding of astronomical issues by the audience, thanks to the work of the very active Astronomy and Space Society (ASS) of the city of Volos. Within the framework of the Conference, the 37th General Assembly of the Society convened on Wednesday, July 10.
We would like to thank the Local Organizing Committee, especially Prof. Loukas Zachilas and Dr. Maria Kontaxi-Zachila, members of the educational staff at the Department of Economics of the University of Thessaly, as well as the students and members of the ASS who offered their assistance as volunteers during the conference. Moreover, we would like to thank the sponsors of the Conference, namely the University of Thessaly, the National Observatory of Athens and the Academy of Athens. More information about events, photos, as well as the minutes of the 37th General Assembly will be posted on the Conference website in the coming days.
