4. The 2021 "Best PhD thesis Prize - Emilios Harlaftis"

On September 1, 2020 the Governing Council of Hel.A.S. accepted a generous offer by the family of Dr. Emilios Harlaftis, an active member of our Society who passed away at an early age in 2005, and unanimously decided to rename “Best PhD thesis Prize" awarded by the Society every two years, to “Best PhD thesis Prize- Emilios Harlaftis”. The statues and application procedure of the award remain as in the past.

Applications for the "2021 Best PhD thesis Prize - Emilios Harlaftis" are now open. They are restricted to Junior members of the Society, who have successfully defended their Ph.D. thesis between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2020. The application deadline is January 31, 2021. Additional information is available here.

5. Monthly Colloquium of HelAS

Motivated by the opportunities provided by modern technology, the GS of the Society decided to commence a "Monthly Colloquium of HelAS" in order to bring virtually together once a month all members of our Society from across Greece and all over the world, who wish to attend an exciting astronomy talk by a distinguished colleague and discuss about science. Moreover, we hope that this event will become a regular activity of the Society which will greatly benefit small astronomy groups (and their students), since it may be challenging for them to attract high quality speakers locally. Prof. Vlahakis, in collaboration with Prof. Patsourakos and Prof. Tassis are responsible for selecting our colloquium speakers. The colloquia will take place the second Tuesday of every month at 18:00-19:00.

We are happy to announce that the inaugural colloquium speaker is Dr. Jason Spyromilio (ESO, Germany). Details of his colloquium follow:

6. Nature Astronomy - Correction

In the September 2020 newsletter it was erroneously mentioned that publication in Nature Astronomy requires page charges. This is incorrect, since publishing in Nature Astronomy (an astronomy journal with an impact factor of 10.5) is based only on research excellence and it is free of charge. We would like to thank Dr. Marios Karouzos, Senior Editor of Nature Astronomy, for clarifying this.
