  10. About this Newsletter
1. Short News

We would like to draw the attention of the members of Hel.A.S. to an obituary of Prof. Eugene Parker, a prominent American solar and plasma physicist who passed away on March 15, prepared by the past President of HelAS, Prof. Kanaris Tsinganos at the request of the American Astronomical Society. Prof. Parker was invited speaker during the 6th Hellenic Astronomical Conference in 2003, and he had participated in several scientific events in Greece.

All members are encouraged to review the minutes of the 17th meeting of the Governing Council of HelAS, which took place on April 11, 2022.

2. The 41st General Assembly and Elections to Hel.A.S.

The agenda of the 41st General Assembly of the Society, which will take place on Friday June 24, 2022, is available here. The same day we will have the first electronic elections of new Governing Council and Auditors. We would like to remind all members that in order to participate in the upcoming elections one must have paid the 2021 membership fee by May 31. After this date, the e-mails of the voters will be submitted to the electronic voting system for processing. According to article 33 of our Constitution, only members with no outstanding membership fees are eligible to vote.

3. Summer School of Hel.A.S.

After a two year delay due to the pandemic, the 4th summer school of the Society, entitled "The Milky Way Galaxy - Formation and Evolution", will take place in Athens during 25-27 July 2022. More information for the summer school, which is also sponsored by the Univ. of Athens, is available here.

4. Onassis Lectures 2022 in Gravitational Waves

The Institute of Astrophysics - FORTH is sharing the news that the 2022 Onassis Lectures, organised annually since 2001 by the Onassis Public Benefit Foundation and FORTH will have "Gravitational Waves" as their science theme. The keynote Lecturer will be Barry Barish, the Linde Professor of Physics Emeritus at Caltech (USA) and 2017 Physics Nobel Prize winner. The lectures will take place, as usual, at the FORTH premises in Heraklion at the island of Crete, Greece on July 25–29, 2022.

The Onassis Foundation will provide financial support to 35 Greek and 15 International qualified students (post Graduate and advanced Undergraduate) to cover their travel and accommodation subsistence in order to attend the lectures. The application deadline is June 10, 2022. More information is available here.

5. One new position at the RCAAM/Academy of Athens

The Research Center for Astronomy and Applied Mathematics of the Academy of Athens invites applications for a position at the rank of Assistant Researcher on the topic of Dynamical Systems in Astronomy and in Quantum Mechanics. The deadline is the 27th of June 2022.

6. Two post-doctoral positions at IAASARS-NOA

Two post-doctoral positions on extragalactic astrophysics are available at the Institute for Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Applications and Remote Sensing (IAASARS) of the National Observatory Athens funded by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation. The expected starting date of the posts is Autumn 2022 for a duration of up to 30 months. Interested parties contact Dr. Antonis Georgakakis (age@noa.gr) for more details.

7. Positions in extragalactic astrophysics at IA-FORTH

Two (2) postdoctoral researcher and two (2) PhD student positions on extragalactic astrophysics with emphasis on radio data analysis, are available at the Institute of Astrophysics, FORTH. The selected individuals will be funded by the ERC project "SMILE: Search for milli-lenses to discriminate between dark matter models" and they will work under the supervision of Dr. Carolina Casadio. The expected starting date of the posts is September 2022. More information is available here. Interested parties may contact Dr. Carolina Casadio for more details.

One (1) postdoctoral researcher and one (1) PhD student position on extragalactic astrophysics with emphasis on Infrared Extra-galactic Astrophysics, are available at the Institute of Astrophysics, FORTH. The selected individuals will be funded by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (ELIDEK) project entitled: "XTREME: The Extended Interstellar Medium of Extreme Galaxies", under the supervision of Dr. Tanio Diaz Santos. The expected starting date of the posts is September 2022. More information is available here. Interested parties may contact Dr. Diaz Santos for more details.

8. Monthly Colloquium of Hel.A.S.

We are happy to announce that the May 2022 colloquium speaker is Dr. Sotiria Fotopoulou. As usual, videos of all past colloquia are available in the Youtube channel of the Society. Details of the upcoming colloquium follow:

Abstract:Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are signposts of the luminous growth of supermassive black holes. During this phase, strong winds can impact the formation of new stars in a galaxy. The short lifetime of the AGN phase makes them very rare objects. Moreover, they are often found with varying methods across the electromagnetic spectrum, with very little overlap between the selected galaxy samples. In tandem with the traditional geometrical paradigm that gives rise to the AGN types (obscured versus unobscured), pieces of evidence point towards an evolutionary approach linking the various AGN populations and also the host galaxy. Upcoming surveys such as Euclid and LSST will offer a significant boost in galaxy and AGN studies due to the unparalleled sample size of billions of detections. Machine-learning techniques are arguably a very efficient approach to selecting AGN, next to traditional AGN selection methods. Such methods can be trained to identify known classes of objects, but they can also be used for novelty and anomaly detection. I will present recent results and future prospects of machine-learning identification methods in anticipation of Euclid and highlight the challenges posed by AGN.
