1. Short News

The Society would like to congratulate George Paraschos who has recently successfully defended his PhD thesis entitled "A comprehensive analysis of the nucleus of the radio source 3C 84 with VLBI" at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn under the supervision of Prof. Anton Zensus, Prof. Andreas Eckart and Dr. Thomas Krichbaum. The Society extends its best wishes for further success in his professional pursuits. The Society wishes to remind its Junior Members of the December 15 travel grant deadline for meeting trips planned for the first half of 2023. Notice that every PhD student and every meeting (Conference, Workshop or School) is eligible for partial reimbursement of expenses, provided that the meeting is deemed paramount for the completion of the student's PhD Thesis.

2. Job Opportunities in Greece

Two (2) promotion-related positions with academic subject "Theoretical Astrophysics" at the level of Professor have opened at the Dept. of Physics of the Univ. of Crete. Interested parties are invited to submit all the required supporting documents electronically through the information system "APELLA", (codes APP30040 & APP30040 ) at the web address https://apella.minedu.gov.gr. The deadline for submission of applications is December 13, 2022. Two (2) PhD positions as well as two (2) postdoctoral researcher positions, associated with the ERA Chair in "Astro-Informatics" of Dr. Jean-Luc Starck, are available at the Institute of Computer Science and the Institute of Astrophysics at FORTH. More information can be found in the following links: Postdocs in : a) Radio Weak Lensing, b) Weak Lensing & High Order Statistics  PhDs in: a) Morphology and Spatial Distribution of the Dust Emission using Deep Learning Methods, b) Weak lensing cosmology In the upcoming months the Institute of Astrophysics (IA) and the Institute of Computer Science (ICS) at the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH) are expecting to recruit two (2) postdoctoral researchers in stellar astrophysics and astro-statistics and two (2) PhD students in radio astronomy and signal processing. The researchers will work under the supervision of Dr. John Antoniadis (IA-FORTH) and Dr. George Tzagkarakis (ICS-FORTH) and they will collaborate with an international team of experts in the field. The positions will be funded by the European Commission grant entitled "ARGOS Conceptual Design Study: Designing a Next-Generation Radio Facility for Multi-Messenger Astronomy”. Details about the required qualifications and the application process can be found on the ARGOS website. Interested candidates are invited to communicate with Dr. John Antoniadis. One (1) PhD or one (1) post-doctoral position on high-energy astrophysics at the Department of Physics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens will be announced in the upcoming months. The position will be funded by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (HFRI) scheme under the grant entitled "ASTRAPE" with PI Dr. Georgios Vasilopoulos. The selected candidate will work on topics related to extreme accretion in X-ray binaries and Ultra luminous X-ray sources under the supervision of the PI and in collaboration with international researchers. Expected starting date is between February-April 2023, for a duration of up to 24 months. For the PhD position, applicants should hold a masters degree in Astrophysics or to graduate early in 2023. Depending on the available candidates the position could be also offered on a post-doctoral level. 3. The 2023 "Best PhD thesis Prize - Emilios Harlaftis"

On September 1, 2020 the Governing Council of Hel.A.S. accepted a generous offer by the family of Dr. Emilios Harlaftis, an active member of our Society who passed away at an early age in 2005, and unanimously decided to rename “Best PhD thesis Prize" awarded by the Society every two years, to “Best PhD thesis Prize- Emilios Harlaftis”. The statues and application procedure of the award remain as in the past. Applications for the "2023 Best PhD thesis Prize - Emilios Harlaftis" are now open. They are restricted to Junior members of the Society, who have successfully defended their Ph.D. thesis between January 1, 2021 and December 31, 2022. The application deadline is January 31, 2023. Details of the upcoming colloquium follow: 21st Monthly Colloquium of HelAS - 13 December 2022 "eROSITA on SRG: Mapping the Hot Universe" by Dr. Andrea Merloni, Max-Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics, Germany Tuesday, 13 December 2022 at 15:00 Athens time (UTC + 2:00) Click for ZOOM link (Meeting ID: 838 3805 4424 and Passcode: 685097) Abstract: The next generation of wide-area, sensitive X-ray surveys designed to map the hot and energetic Universe has arrived, thanks to eROSITA (extended ROentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array), the soft X-ray instrument on the Russian-German Spektrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) mission. eROSITA high sensitivity, large field of view, high spatial resolution and survey efficiency is expanding the horizon of X-ray astronomy and delivering large legacy samples for many classes of objects in the energy range 0.2-5 keV. Over this bandpass, telescopes are sensitive to the emission of millions of degrees hot gas, revealing, among others, the most massive collapsed structures of the Universe (clusters and groups of galaxies), the hot ISM of the Milky Way and the Supernova remnants that energise it, the atmospheres of neutron stars, the magnetic coronae of accretion discs around black holes. I will present an overview of the instrument capabilities, the current status of the mission, and a few selected early science results from the survey program, which has completed last December the fourth of its eight planned charts of the whole sky.
