  8. About this Newsletter
1. Short News

The Society would like to congratulate Dr. Chrysa Avdellidou for her recent election as a member of the council of the Royal Astronomical Society in the UK. She will serve this post for 3 years. The Society extends its wishes for further success in her professional career.

2. EAS Membership for Hel.A.S. members

We would like to remind all our members that the European Astronomical Society (EAS) is offering free membership to all junior and ordinary members of Hel.A.S., as well as members of all EAS affiliated societies. As a result, with just the Hel.A.S. annual membership fee, one may also receive all EAS member benefits, presented here

Once a year we have the possibility to update this list so new members of Hel.A.S., as well as old members who did not take advantage of this opportunity can benefit from the EAS membership. EAS may use the members’ data for EAS-only matters, such as sending e-mails with various information, as well as the EAS newsletter, logging on the EAS website, etc. The EAS will never sell or otherwise make available the members’ data to commercial or non-commercial third parties. Members that leave the EAS can request that their data be erased from the EAS database.

All members of HelAS who are not already EAS members and wish to join may send an e-mail to secretary@helas.gr with the following sentence as the Subject line.

“I am an Ordinary/Junior member of HelAS and I wish to join EAS for free!”

The e-mail must be received by September 15, 2024.

3. ESA Archival Research Visitor Programme

To increase the scientific return from its space science missions, the European Space Agency (ESA) welcomes applications from scientists interested in pursuing research projects based on data publicly available in the ESA Space Science Archives (https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/esdc). The ESA Archival Research Visitor Programme is open to scientists, at all career levels, affiliated with institutes in ESA Member States and Collaborating States, although we will also consider strong applications from outside those states. Early-career scientists (within 10 years of the PhD) and PhD students are particularly encouraged to apply. We encourage applications from women and minorities. The peer-review evaluation process is anonymised to ensure equal opportunities for all applicants. During their stay, visiting scientists will have access to archives and mission specialists for help with the retrieval, calibration, and analysis of archival data. In principle, all areas of space research covered by ESA science missions can be supported. Residence lasts typically between one and three months, also distributed over multiple visits. Research projects can be carried out at ESAC (Madrid, Spain) and at ESTEC (Noordwijk, Netherlands). To offset the expenses incurred by visitors, ESA covers travel costs from and to the home institution and provides support for lodging expenses and meals. Applications received before 1 November 2024 will be considered for visits in spring and summer 2025. For further details, including areas of research and contact information, please refer to: https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/esdc/visitor-programme or write to the programme coordinators at arvp@cosmos.esa.int

4. Krimigis Postdoctoral Scholars Program

We would like to inform our Members about the "Krimigis Postdoctoral Scholars Program'' at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). The program provides extraordinary scientists with the opportunity to engage in cutting-edge projects designed to advance the future of space science. For more details about the program and how to apply, visit https://www.jhuapl.edu/work/impact/space-science-and-engineering/krimigis-postdoctoral-scholars

5. Summer School of Hel.A.S.

The 5th summer school of the Society, entitled "Magnetohydrodynamics in Astrophysics", will take place in Ioannina during 16-20 September 2024. More information about the summer school, which is also sponsored by the Univ. of Ioannina, is available here.

6. 2024 NEON Observing School

The 2024 NEON Observing school will take place in Greece at the facilities of the National Observatory of Athens, 13 - 25 October 2024. During the school the 2.3 metre Aristarchos telescope and 1.2 metre Kryoneri telescope will be used. In addition data from the 2 metre Liverpool Telescope will be obtained. The Liverpool Telescope is a robotic telescope located on La Palma in Spain.

During this two week school the participants will plan observation, carry-out hands-on observations with professional 1-2 metre telescopes, prepare robotic observations, and reduce and analyse data. All this will be done with the help of an experienced tutor. The school also includes lectures on topics related to telescopes and observing techniques.

More information is available here: https://www2.mpia-hd.mpg.de/~korhonen/ORP_training/NEON2024/
