1. SHORT NEWS
-------------
Time does fly and four years have already passed since the web
server of Hel.A.S. was created. The curators of the web server hope
that the compiled information proves to be useful to all Hel.A.S.
members. If you have any comments or suggestions on its contents,
please send your input to the webmanagers.
The 20th newsletter of the European Astronomical Society, which
celebrates the 10th year anniversary of the Society, is available

2. MEMBERS IN NEW POSITIONS
---------------------------
We would like to congratulate our colleague, Dr. Alexander Nindos,
who has been elected as "Lecturer" - and recently moved - to the
Department of Physics of the University of Ioannina.
We would also like to congratulate our colleague, Dr. Panos Patsis,
who has been elected as "Researcher B" at the Research Center for
Astronomy and Applied Mathematics of the Academy of Athens.
3. NEW Ph.D. DEGREES AWARDED
----------------------------
The council of Hel.A.S. would like to extend its congratulations to
the following Junior members for obtaining their Ph.D. degrees in
the second half of 2000.
- Basilakos Spyros, Ph.D., University of Athens, Greece
(now a postdoc at Imperial College, UK)
- Georgoulis Manolis, Ph.D., University of Thessaloniki, Greece
(now a postdoc at Johns Hopkins Univ., Maryland, USA)
- Gouliermis Dimitris, Ph.D., University of Athens, Greece
- Hatziminaoglou Evanthia, Ph.D., Observatoire Midi-Pyrenees, France
- Kitsionas Spyridon, Ph.D., University of Wales, Cardiff, U.K.
According to the constitution of Hel.A.S., all Junior members
obtaining a Ph.D. degree become Ordinary members in the next General
Assembly of the Society.
4. HEL.A.S. PRIZE FOR THE BEST PH.D. IN 2000
--------------------------------------------
Members of the Hel.A.S. and other colleagues (Ph.D. supervisors in
particular) are encouraged to bring to the attention of the Council
potential candidates for the "Best Ph.D. in Astronomy" prize. The prize
will be awarded to an active junior member of the Society, who has
successfully defended his/her Ph.D. thesis during the calendar year
2000. The prize is accompanied by the sum of 120.000 drx. The recipient
will be selected by the Council of Hel.A.S. Please note that this is
an award, not a scholarship, and therefore no formal application
procedure is involved.
Past recipients of the award are:
1998 - Dr. Markos Georganopoulos, @ Boston University, USA
1999 - Dr. Manolis Xilouris, @ Univ. of Crete, Greece
