1. SHORT NEWS
-------------
As the new century and the next millennium are on our doorstep,
the Council of Hel.A.S. would like to extend its wishes for a Merry
Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year to all members of the
Society. May the new year bring all the best to the greek astronomy.
2. NEW PHDs
-----------
On November 6, 2000 Mr. E. Bratsolis defended his PhD "Automatic
methods of extraction and classification of stars from digitized
images of low dispersion objective prism spectra" at the Department
of Physics, University of Athens (supervisor: Dr. M. Kontizas).
Recently, Dr. Bratsolis won a TMR Fellowship to continue his
work in the "Ecole Nationale Superieure de Telecommunications (ENST),
Departement de TSI (Traitement du signal et des images).
According to the constitution of Hel.A.S., all Junior members
obtaining a Ph.D. degree become Ordinary members in the next General
Assembly of the Society.
3. MEMBERS IN NEW POSITIONS

Dr. R. Korakitis has been promoted to Associate Professor at the
Department of Rural and Surveying Engineering, National Technical
University of Athens, on November 21, 2000
4. JOB OPENING
--------------
The Department of Physics (Section of Theoretical Physics) of the
University of Ioannina invites applications for a position at the
Associate Professor or Assistant Professor level in the field of
"Theoretical Physics with emphasis on Cosmology". For more information

5. THE 2.3m ARISTARCHOS TELESCOPE
---------------------------------
Earlier this month an inspection team from the National Observatory
of Athens, accompanied by hired expert engineers, visited the
construction site of Zeiss at Jena, Germany. Substantial progress has
been achieved. The mirror and telescope tube have been delivered and
the mechanical assembly of the acquisition and guidance systems have
been finished.
Meanwhile, site works for the building of the telescope have
started and a container has been installed at the telescope site at a
hight of 2300 m.
According to the Zeiss timetable, the Final Acceptance Test of the
telescope and enclosure on-site will be completed by the end of
September 2001. More information can be found at:

6. PH.D. / POSTDOC OPENINGS
---------------------------
Several post-doctoral (post-doc) and pre-doctoral (PhD) positions
are immediately available within a Research and Training Network (RTN)
funded by the EU on Plasma Astrophysics, Theory, Observations and
Numerics.
The eight collaborating groups are at the University of Crete,
University of St Andrews, University of Strasbourg, University of Leuven,
FOM Institute of Plasma Physics in Amsterdam, The Astrophysics Institute
of the Canary Islands, University of Bochum and University of Potsdam.

7. JENAM 2001
-------------
The next Joint European and National Astronomy Meeting, entitled
"Five Days of Creation: Astronomy with Large Telescopes from Ground
and Space", will take place in Munich, Germany from September 10
to 14, 2001. This will be the 10th meeting of the European
Astronomical Society and the 75th Annual Assembly of Astronomische
Gesellschaft.
