------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. SHORT NEWS
-------------
- A new web page, providing information on sources of funding in
Greece for academically related scholarships and fellowships, has
been made now available. You may access it directly at:
http://www.astro.auth.gr/elaset/scholarships.html
or via a link from the "Astronomy in Greece" web page of our server.
If you have any suggestions/additions to that list, please let us know.
2. MEMBERS IN NEW POSITIONS
---------------------------
We would like to congratulate Dr. Dimitris Psaltis (currently at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology) who was recently awarded a 5
year fellowship in theoretical astrophysics from the Institute of
Advanced Studies in Princeton NJ, USA, and will be moving there in
August 2001.
We would like to congratulate Dr. Emmanuel Bratsolis who recently
moved as a TMR fellow to the Ecole Nationale Superieure de
Telecommunications (ENST), Departement de TSI (Traitement du Signal
et des Images) in Paris, France.
3. IN MEMORY OF A.G. MICHALITSIANOS
-----------------------------------
An event to honor the memory of the eminent Greek-American
astrophysicist Andrew Gerasimos Michalitsianos (1947-1997) of
NASA-GSFC USA will take place in his island of origin, Cephalonia,
Greece, on August 4th 2001. Colleagues and friends from Greece and
the USA will make a series of presentations on his life and scientific
achievements and give some review talks on recent advances in
astrophysics & cosmology. For more information visit:
http://eudoxos.snd.edu.gr/eudoxos/AM-event.htm
In a special short ceremony, scheduled to also take place for this
occasion, a new 0.6m robotic telescope, which was funded jointly by
the Ministry of Education and the Prefecture of Cephalonia & Ithaki
will be named after Andrew Michalitsianos. The "AM" telescope is
installed in the new National Observatory of Education and Research
Center for Astrophysics "Eudoxos", at Mount Ainos, in Cephalonia.
4. ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP FEES: PAYMENT USING CREDIT CARD
----------------------------------------------------
It is now possible to make payments of your Hel.A.S. membership
using a VISA credit card. This should clearly facilitate our members
who live and work outside Greece, as well as all members who wish to
avoid the extra charges associated with money orders or wire money
transfers. The new payment invoice for the year 2001 is available in
PDF format and can be retrieved from the end of the web page:
http://www.astro.auth.gr/elaset/membership.html
or directly from:
http://www.astro.auth.gr/elaset/forms/dues2001.pdf
Please note that there is a deadline by which members should pay
their membership fees. For this year it has been set to October 1st.
Payments are accepted in Greek drachmas or Euros.
You may contact the treasurer of Hel.A.S. Prof. Panagiotis Niarchos
(Tel. +30 1 7276896, E-mail: pniarcho@cc.uoa.gr), for information on
the status of your past payments or any other questions you may have
on this issue.
5. SCISOFT: THE EUROPEAN SOUTHERN OBSERVATORY SOFTWARE COLLECTION
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Scisoft is a project within ESO aimed at providing a collection of
astronomical software utilities, mostly public domain tools developed
outside ESO, in a uniform way at all four ESO sites. Major data
analysis packages (e.g. IRAF/STSDAS, ESO-MIDAS and IDL) are included
as well as many smaller utilities. There are currently three
versions, for Solaris 2.6, Linux Redhat 6.2 and HP-UX 10.20, which
are available in a CDROM. For more information about the project and
details on how one can request a CDROM, please visit:
http://www.eso.org/science/scisoft/
