  1. SHORT NEWS
  -------------
  
    A new Greek National Committee for Astronomy was appointed, on August
  1, 2001, by the Minister of Development. Chairman of the Committee is 
  the President of Hel.A.S. Professor J.H. Seiradakis (University of 
  Thessaloniki), Vice-Chairman Professor J. Ventura (University of  Crete 
  and Members Dr. E. Harlaftis (National Observatory of Athens), 
  Professor S. Katsanevas (University of Lyon, France) and Dr. E. Kontizas 
  (National Observatory of Athens). Professor K. Tsinganos (University of 
  Athens) and Dr. Em. Plionis (National Observatory of Athens) were 
  appointed as substitute members.


  2. MEMBERS IN NEW POSITIONS
  ---------------------------

    We would like to congratulate Dr. Manolis Xilouris (currently at
  the University of Crete) who was recently awarded a postdoctoral
  fellowship from the "Service d' Astrophysique of the Commissariat a
  l' Energie Atomique (CEA)" at Saclay outside Paris, France.
  Dr. Xilouris, who was also the recipient of the 1999 best Ph.D. prize
  of Hel.A.S, will be moving to his new position at the beginning of
  October.

    Professor Kanaris Tsinganos moved from the University of Crete 
  to the Department of Physics of the University of Athens.

    Dr. Eleni Chatzichristou moved from NASA Goddard Space Flight
  Center to a new postdoc position at the Space Telescope Science
  Institute, in Baltimore MD, USA.


  3. NEW PH.D. POSITIONS IN ASTRONOMY
  -----------------------------------

    The Solar Physics Department at the Royal Observatory of Belgium
  proposes to hire, in collaboration with a Belgian university, a
  university graduate to develop mathematical techniques for the
  analysis of satellite images of the solar corona. The candidate is
  expected to conduct this project in the framework of a Ph.D.

    A PhD studentship on the building, testing and science use of a 
  new wide-field astronomy camera in Queen's University, Belfast, is
  available for 3 years from October 1st, 2001. The PhD studentship 
  will pay full tuition fees and a maintenance grant of the order of 
  7,500 pounds to a citizen of any European Union state. 
    Applications, which should include a detailed curriculum vitae, 
  should be e-mailed to F.Keenan@qub.ac.uk by 5pm on Friday, 31 August
  2001 (please note that the deadline for application ends in 4 days).

  4. 5TH HELLENIC ASTRONOMICAL CONFERENCE
  ---------------------------------------

    This is the last Newsletter before the conference in Crete. We hope
