1. SHORT NEWS
-------------
On December 4, 2001 Professor Jocelyn Bell Burnell will deliver, in
Thessaloniki, a public lecture entitled "In pursuit of neutron stars".
The same lecture will also be presented in Athens on December 6. Details
on the locations and exact times can be found at:
http://www.astro.auth.gr/elaset/events/bell.html
Professor Jocelyn Bell Burnell is currently Dean of Science at the
University of Bath (U.K.) and she is known internationally for her
seminal work on the discovery of pulsars in 1968.
The web server of the Hellenic Astronomical Society has completed
its five years of virtual life. The curators of the server hope that
the compiled information continues to be proven useful to all members
of Hel.A.S. If you have any comments or suggestions on improving the
contents of the server, please send your input to the web-managers.
2. GREEK ASTRONOMERS AND E.S.A.
-------------------------------
In view of the pending formal agreement between Greece and ESA,
http://www.gsrt.gr/html/press/dt161101Edinburg/press_gr.html
the Greek National Committee for Astronomy (GNCA), in order to promote the
interests of greek astronomers, is preparing a memo to be handed to the
General Secretariat of Research and Technology (GSRT).
Hel.A.S. members are kindly requested to check the ESA projects to which
Greece could potentially participate (e.g. ARTE, GSTP, ERS, EOPP, GSP,
PRODEX, etc) and send a very brief note (preferably not exceeding 150 words)
to GNCA (at gnca@astro.noa.gr) on any project that they believe may be
interested to apply for. Special attention should be given to project
PRODEX, which involves research in astronomy.
GNCA will use the replies in order to form a strong argument for Greece
to join ESA projects which are of interest to greek astronomers.
3. MEMBERS IN NEW POSITIONS
---------------------------
Dr. Antonis Polatidis recently left the Onsala Space Observatory
(Sweden), for a new postdoc position at the Max Planck Institut fur
Radioastronomie in Bonn (Germany).
4. CHANGES IN THE TELEPHONE NUMBERS IN GREECE
---------------------------------------------
As most of the Hel.A.S. members in Greece may already know, the
phone numbers throughout Greece will be changing on January 20th
2002. Under the new system all fixed-line phone numbers will become
10 digits, from the current seven digit system. This is accomplished
by adding a zero ("0") between the area code and the current phone
number.
Note that the above calling system has been in effect in parallel
with the old one since July 2001, but it will become the only way of
reaching someone in Greece after January 20, 2002. For more
information you may check:
http://www.ote-shop.gr/newnumbers.htm
The records of all members of Hel.A.S. in Greece have already been
updated in the online directory to reflect this change. Please do
inspect your web entry to double check that your phone number is
correct. If you find a mistake please inform the Secretary.
5. HEL.A.S. PRIZE FOR THE BEST PH.D. IN 2001
--------------------------------------------
All members of Hel.A.S. and Ph.D. supervisors in particular,
are encouraged to bring to the attention of the Council potential
candidates for the "Best Ph.D. in Astronomy" prize.
The prize is accompanied by the monetary sum of 350 Euro (120,000
GDR) and it will be awarded to an active junior member of the
Society who has successfully defended his/her Ph.D. thesis during
the 2001 calendar year. The recipient will be selected by the
Council of Hel.A.S. Please note that this is an award, not a
scholarship, and therefore no formal application procedure is
involved.
Past recipients of the award are:
1998 - Dr. Markos Georganopoulos (Ph.D. from Boston University, USA)
1999 - Dr. Manolis Xilouris (Ph.D. from Univ. of Athens, Greece)
2000 - Dr. Spyros Basilakos (Ph.D. from Univ. of Athens, Greece)
For more information please contact the Secretary of Hel.A.S.,
Dr. Harry Varvoglis (varvogli@astro.auth.gr).
6. JOB OPENING
--------------
The Department of Physics (Section of High Energy and Elementary
Particles) of the University of Crete invites applications for a
position at the Associate Professor level in the field of "High Energy
Theoretical Physics and Cosmology". For more information please check:
http://hep.physics.uoc.gr/Positions.html#Fac
or
The Secretary of the Department, Tel. +30-810-394004 and -394308.
The deadline for applications is December 15, 2001.
7. THE INTERNATIONAL MAX-PLANK RESEARCH SCHOOL ON ASTROPHYSICS
--------------------------------------------------------------
For the second time, the International Max-Planck Research School
on Astrophysics (IMPRS) is accepting applications for its PhD program.
Located in the beautiful Munich-Garching area in southern Bavaria
(Germany), the school offers a unique environment for graduate students
due to the presence of four internationally renowned institutes which
form the school:
* The Max-Planck Institute for extraterrestrial Physics (MPE)
* The Observatory of the University of Munich (LMU/USM)
* The Max-Planck Institute for Astrophysics (MPA)
* The European Southern Observatory (ESO)
In addition, Astro-particle physics groups at the Technical
University of Munich and the Werner-Heisenberg Institute for Physics
are participating as associated partners.
The closing date for applications for the program starting in
September 2002 is January 15, 2002. All successful applicants will be
supported by a PhD fellowship if required. More details on the IMPRS
program, admission requirements, as well as application forms can be
found at the IMPRS website:
