1. SHORT NEWS
-------------

Professor Mihalis Papagiannis (Boston University), a prominent
astronomer and a founding member of our society passed away on the
11th of July. Dr. Papagiannis had taught at the Universities of Athens,
Thessaloniki and Crete. He was the first President of Commission 51
(Bioastronomy) of the International Astronomical Union. He was well
known for his work on searches for life in the universe, impact
craters, radio astronomy and solar and space physics.

2. MEMBERS APPOINTED IN NEW POSITIONS
-------------------------------------

The editors of the newsletter become recently aware of the following
appointments of two Hel.A.S. members.

Dr. D. Synachopoulos has been appointed as Researcher at the
National Observatory of Athens.

Dr. E. Harlaftis has been appointed as Researcher at the
National Observatory of Athens.

Note:
-----
The editors of the newsletter would greatly appreciate if information
on new appointments and moreover on the annoucements of the corresponding
job openings is communicated to them as early as possible. This is the
only way we can diffuse such information on time, to all members of Hel.A.S.,
who are probably very interested by news of this type.
