 1. THE 6th HELLENIC ASTRONOMICAL CONFERENCE
 -------------------------------------------
As it has been already announced, the deadline for registration
and submission of contributions to the 6th Hel.A.S. conference
was the 31st of May. To accomodate the late registeations, the
SOC/LOC decided to extend the deadline to June 20, 2003.
We remind our members that they may register and submit their
 contributions as soon as possible.

 2. SHORT NEWS
 -------------

We would like to congratulate Dr. Emilios Harlaftis who has been
awarded a 2003/2004 Fulbright grant to work as a visiting research
scholar at the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Harlaftis
recently moved from the Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics of
the National Observatory of Athens to the Institute for Space Applications
and Remote Sensing of the National Observatory of Athens.

 3. MEMBERS IN NEW POSITIONS
 ---------------------------
We would like to congratulate Dr. Christos Efthymiopoulos who was recently
elected to the position of Researcher C' (EREYNHTHS A) at the Research
Center for Astronomy and Applied Mathematics of the Academy of Athens.
We would also like to congratulate Dr. Dimitris Gouliermis for his
appointment at the Max-Planck-Institut fuer Astronomie, Heidelberg, Germany
as a PostDoc-Stipendiat working for the European Network "Adaptive Optics
for Extremely Large Telescopes" since the 1st of May 2003.

 4. ASTRONOMY & ASTROPHYSICS BOARD MEETING AT HERAKLEION, CRETE
 --------------------------------------------------------------

On May 10, the A&A Board, along with the Editors and Publishers, convened
at the University of Crete in Herakleion in their annual meeting. Some weighty
decisions regarding the journal's future were taken during this event. Two issues,
among those discussed, are of immediate concern to the Greek astronomical
community, which often publishes its research results in the journal.

  (a) Seven new Scientific Editors were appointed by the Board in order
to improve the efficiency and production of the journal. They are: J. E.
Beckman (Inst. De Astrofisica de Canarias), F. Combes (Observatoire de
Paris), A. Jones (Orsay), N. Langer (Utrecht), S. Shore, (Piza), M.
Walmsley (Firenze),W. Schmidt (Kipenheuer Inst., Freiburg).

  (b) Impact Factor Controversy.
There is a wide spread impression within the astronomical community
that A&A publications have a smaller impact, as measured by the number
of citations they receive, as compared to other major astronomy
journals. This impression is actually supported by the impact factor
statistics published in the Journal of Citation Reports (JCR), which
have recently been found to be seriously flawed. The abbreviated
citations to A&A and some other Journals were not being fully counted,
being considered ambiguous. The JCR editor has promised to have this
problem rectified in future issues, hopefully placing A&A in its
rightful place among the top journals in the field.

More details about the meeting will be published in the forthcoming
 issue of Hipparchos.

 5. SUMMER SCHOOL ON PLASMA PHYSICS
 ----------------------------------

A summer school on "Basic Processes of Turbulent Plasmas" will
take place in Chalkidiki, Greece, between 22 and 27 of September
2003. The school is organized by the Research Training Network
"Theory, Observations and Simulations of Turbulence in Space
Plasmas" which is funded by the European Union. Researchers at the
pre- and post-doctoral level are encouraged to apply to the school
before the end of June 2003. Participation will be limited to 30-40
students and the lectures will be at the graduate level. More
information about the school can be found at:
