1. THE 6th HELLENIC ASTRONOMICAL CONFERENCE
-------------------------------------------
As it has been announced, the deadline for registration and
submission of contributions to the 6th Hel.A.S. conference was
extended to June 20, 2003. Dr Dapergolas of the Local Organising
Committee just informed us that more than 120 abstracts and more
than 150 registrations have been received so far. A first count
of the distribution of the submitted abstracts is as follows:
Sun and the Heliosphere (33), Stars and Stellar Systems (22),
Infrastructure of Astronomy in Greece (18),
Extragalactic Astronomy (15), High Energy Astrophysics (11),
Cosmology, Relativity and Relativistic Astrophjysics (11),
Galactic Dybnamics and Chaotic Dynamical Systems (5),
History and Teaching of Astronomy (5).
We plan to announce the programm of the conference in the
coming days with an extra issue of the electronic newsletter.
2. SHORT NEWS
---------------
Dr. Nektarios Vlahakis has been invited by the University of
Chicago, USA, to spend there the summer of 2003, continuing
his research on Gamma Ray Bursts, in collaboration with
Prof. Arieh Konigl.
Dr. Olga Malandraki has been invited by the Observatoire de
Paris, Section Meudon, during the summer of 2003, to carry out
research on the association of solar energetic particle events
observed by the ULYSSES and ACE spacecraft (ESA/NASA)
with solar radio observations by the Nancay Radioheliograph.
Dr. Malandraki's visit will be financed by the Observatoire
de Paris and she will collaborate there with Dr. Monique Pick.
3. MEMBERS AND YOUNG ASTROPHYSICISTS IN NEW POSITIONS
--------------------------------------------------------
We would like to congratulate the member of our Society Dr.
Ioannis Seimenis, Head of the Department of the Mediterranean
Studies of the University of the Aegean, who was elected last
April Vice-Rector of Finance and Development of the University
of the Aegean, for the period 2003-2006.
We would also like to congradulate Dr Yiannis Tsamis, the recent
recipient of one of the two IAU Peter Gruber Foundation Fellow-
ships for the period 2003 - 2006. The Peter Gruber Foundation
Fellowships are given to extremely promising, young astrophysicists
working in any field of astrophysics - either theoretical, observational
or experimental. (http://www.iau.org/IAU/Activities/cosprize.html).
He will be working at the Observatoire de Paris in Meudon from next
September on "Chemical inhomogeneities in HII regions" in collaboration
with Dr Daniel Pequignot. Dr Tsamis received his undergraduate
training in Physics at the Univ. of Thessaloniki (1996) and his M.Sc.
and PhD degrees from the University College in London (2002) with
a thesis devoted to "Heavy element abundances in ionized nebulae".
From September 2002 Dr Tsamis has been working at the Numerical
weather prediction section of the UK Meteorological Office in London.
Congradulations to two undergraduate students from Greece who have
been awarded 1-year studentships funded by the Isaac Newton Group of
telescopes (ING) at the International observatory of La Palma, Canary Islands.
Dimitris Mislis, Physicist/astronomer, University of Thessaloniki,
will work 70% on research and 30% on the 2.5m INT operation
under the supervision of Romano Corradi (ING Astronomy group).
Nikos Apostolakos, Electronics engineer student, Technical University of
Athens will work on electronics and the optimisation of the ING
telescopes' balancing system under the supervision of Clive
Jackmann/AndyHide, ING electronics group. The ING tutor for both
students is Emilios Harlaftis from the National Observatory of Athens.
