 1. THE 6th HELLENIC ASTRONOMICAL CONFERENCE
 -------------------------------------------

This is the last Enewsletter before the 6th conference of the
Hel.A.S. to be held at the National Observatory of Athens, Sept 15
-17. Attached to this newsletter is the detailed programm of all
sessions of the Conference, which will be also put at the webpage of
Hel.A.S. There will be 8 sessions with about 80 presentations in
total and many posters. Among the presentations are the discourses
  by the Hel.A.S. invited speakers:

E.N. Parker : MHD Discontinuities and X-ray Coronae in Astrophysics
  S. Wagner : Variability of AGN and Quasars via multiwavelength observations
  J. Kirk : Relativistic flows and particle acceleration
  P. Grosbol : What can we learn from near-infrared observations of spiral galaxies?

We hope that we will be seing you in Pedeli and we wish everybody
  a fruitful participation.

  2. SHORT NEWS
  -------------
Gene Parker, a Hel.A.S. invited speaker at the 6th Conference
of Hel.A.S this month, highly distinguished in solar/space physics
and theoretical astrophysics research, has been awarded the 2003
Kyoto Prize for lifetime achievement in Basic Science. Considered
among the world's leading awards for lifetime achievement, the $400,000
Kyoto Prizes recognize significant contributions to the scientific, cultural
and spiritual development of mankind. Parker, 76, the S. Chandrasekhar
Distinguished Service Professor in Physics and Astronomy & Astrophysics,
is cited for establishing a new perspective in astrophysics by elucidating
the solar wind concept, how the solar/stellar dynamo works, the physics of
the so-called Parker instability in the ISM and other cosmic phenomena.
Parker said his career has been full of scientific surprises. "It's been
great fun. You let nature, in the form of astronomy, tell you what's
happening, and then you sit there and try to figure out why, and sometimes
you can and sometimes you still don't know enough to figure out why."

Besides the Hel.A.S. invited talk on Monday Sept 15th, prof. Parker
will speak at the Colloquiium of the Dept. of Physics of the Un. of
Athens at 12.00 of Thursday, Sept. 18th on "Why Hydrodynamics and
MHD is better than we think".

 3. JOB OPENINGS
