1. SHORT NEWS

A contract for the construction of a new 2.3m telescope at Kryoneri Greece
was signed last month between the german company Carl Zeis and the National
Observatory of Athens. The telescope has an estimated cost of 1.5 billion
drachmas and it will be operational by the year 2001. It will be equipped
with many modern instruments and upon completion will be the second biggest
telescope in continental Europe.
