-------------
With this issue we will commence a new section in the newsletter
dedicated to announcing access to international research facilities
(i.e. accepted research proposals) by members of the Society. This
is done in an effort to keep us all informed on the possibilities and
some of the research projects of our members. Please feel free to
share any such news you may have with the editors of the newsletter.
The Greek Mathematical Society and the Astronomical Society of
Halkida are organizing a one day event entitled "Mathematics: a
window to the Universe". The even will take place on the 20th of
Feb. 2005. For more information visit:

3. MEMBERS IN NEW POSITIONS
---------------------------
Dr. Vassilis Charmandaris recently moved from the Astronomy
Department of Cornell University (USA) to an assistant professor
position at the Department of Physics of the University of Crete.
We would like to congratulate Dr. Leonidas Moustakas (STScI) who
has accepted and will soon move to a permanent position with the
Galaxy Evolution Group at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena,
CA (USA).
4. GREECE JOINS THE EUROPEAN SPACE AGENCY
-----------------------------------------
On January 18th, 2005 the Greek Parliament ratified the membership
agreement between Greece and the European Space Agency (ESA), which
was signed on July 19th 2004 between the ESA Director General Jean-
Jacques Dordain and the Greek minister for Development D. Sioufas.
The next step is that this ratification is published by the Government
official newspaper to become a law of the state. The next and final
step is that this published law is deposited by the Greek embassy in
Paris to the French Foreign Ministry. After this last step Greece
will be officially announced an ESA member and thus it will participate
to the ESA Science Programm Committee (SPC).
To summarize all ESA related activities we have created a new web page
in the server of Hel.A.S. For more information please visit:

5. CALL FOR ARTICLES ON NEXT IPPARCHOS ISSUE ON GREEK OBSERVATORIES

As also announced in the previous en, the GC of HelAS has decided
to devotee a special issue of Ipparchos on the status of all Greek
Observatories, such as, Aristarchos, Skinakas, Kryonerion, Stephanion,
Penteli, Gerostathopoulio, Eudoxos, Ioannina.
The issue is planned to circulate before the upcoming 7th Hellenic
Astronomy Conference in Kefallinia 8 - 11 September 2005 and is timely
in view of the recent installation of the ARISTARCHOS telescope on Mt
Helmos, the fact that Greece became a full member of ESA and the
efforts of Greece to join the European Southern Observatory (ESO).
In particular, those in charge of the Observatories are invited to
write a review article on the status of the Observatories. The editors
of this issue are Profs. J. Seiradakis, P. Niarchos and K. Kokkotas.
6. ACCESS TO INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH FACILITIES

time with the Fibre Large Array Multi-Element Spectrograph (FLAMES)
on the 8.2m Kueyen unit of the Very Large Telescope (VLT/ESO, Chile)
for his project entitled "Unravelling the chemical inhomogeneity and
thermal structure of planetary nebulae".
