1. SHORT NEWS
-------------
The latest information on the upcoming 7th Conference of
Hel.A.S. in Kefallinia, including the science program as well as
various other activities, are available in the web site of the
conference at:
http://comas.interzone.gr/cgi/article.cgi
2. NEW ASSOCIATE EDITOR POSITIONS IN A&A
----------------------------------------
Due to a recent restructing in A&A causing an increased workload
on the Associate Editors and the continuing specialization of
sub-fields in astronomy, the A&A Board decided to open two new
positions for Associate Editors, one specialized in Cosmology with a
particular interest in theoretical aspects and the other in
Observational Stellar Physics.
Applications are invited for these two new positions. The
Associate Editors are expected to have a broad knowledge of
astronomy and astrophysics and to have expertise in one of these two
sub-fields. Candidates should have a strong record of published
research in astronomy and astrophysics, should have experience as a
referee and/or journal editor, and be prepared to commit the time
needed to oversee the peer review of up to three hundred papers per
year. Limited support for office equipment and secretarial help, as
well as an annual indemnity, will be provided to the Associate
Editors, and the initial term of appointment is three years.
Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a list of
publications, and a concise covering letter that summarizes the
candidate's qualifications and the reasons for seeking an Associate
Editor position. The likelihood of support from the home institute
for the task should also be discussed in the application.
Applications should preferably be e-mailed or sent/faxed to the
Chairman of the Board of Directors:
Dr. Georges Meynet, Geneva Observatory, 1290 Sauverny, Switzerland,
email georges.meynet@obs.unige.ch, Fax:+41 22 37 92205.
Applications received by 1 October 2005 will receive full
consideration, while informal inquiries about the positions may be
directed by e-mail to Georges Meynet.
3. ESA CALL FOR SPACE SIMULATION STUDIES
-----------------------------------------
ESA, CNES, CSA and NASA cooperate in the organisation of a 60-day
bed rest study to simulate changes in the human body that also occur
in weightlessness. The institute for space medicine and -physiology
MEDES in Toulouse, France, is implementing the 'Women International
Space Simulation for Exploration' (WISE). The first phase with 12
European volunteers has been completed successfully.
For the second phase (identical to the first) with 12 more
volunteers, due to start on September 6, MEDES is still recruiting
candidates. A potential candidate should be female, healthy, 25-40
years old, non-smoker, speaking either Frenchor English, living in
the EU, Norway or Switzerland.
More information on the selection criteria, application process,
and indemnity are available at http://www.medes.fr . For factsheets
of the experiments and other useful information about the study you
may visit http://spaceflight.esa.int/wise
