Sourlantzis Georgios (1964-2006)
Astronomer. He graduated from the University of Thessaloniki in 1991, obtained a Ph.D. in Astrophysics from the Univ. of Crete in 1995, has been a research fellow at the Observatoire de Paris in Meudon, France (1992-1993) and at the Univ. of Strasbourg 1994). At the time of the accident which ended his life he was employed as a Researcher at the Hellenic Center for Marine Research and the TEI of Heraklion, in Crete. |

Biography: |
Senior Astronomer at the European Southern Observatory.
He was born in Athens, Greece on the 27th of January,
1964. He reeived the B.Sc. Honours in Physics (1986) from
the Imperial College of Science and Technology of the
London University, and the Ph.D. in Astrophysics (1989)
also from Imperial. He worked at the Anglo-Australian
Observatory (AAO), Australia first as Research Fellow
(1989-91) and later as a staff Astronomer.There he was
instrument scientist for the Echelle spectrographs and
infrared instrumentation. At ESO he led the NTT
refurbishment effort and later headed the commissioning of
the VLT at Paranal. He has been director of the La Silla
Paranal observatory and also led the E-ELT project office at ESO. His scientific interests are centered on the Supernovae and their physics. He is a fellow of the RAS, fellow of the astronomical Society of Australia and a member of the Hellenic Astronomical Society (Hel.A.S.). |

Professor of Astronomy (retired) at the Physics Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Thessaloniki, Greece. He was born in Castron
Lemnos, Greece on the 20th of June, 1944. He has been
at the University of Thessaloniki since 1970, has received
from there his Ph.D. and Dozentship in Astronomy, and
also has served at various posts of the University. He has
been an invited Research Professor at many universities
and research institutes in Greece, Europe and the USA.
Also he has been an editor or co-editor of many journals,
proceedings volumes, and scientific volumes, and he is a
member of many international scientific societies and
unions, being one of the Founding Members of the Hellenic Astronomical Society (Hel.A.S.). He has been in research since 1970 working on Relativistic Astrophysics, Dynamics of Realistic Stellar Systems, Late Stages of Stellar Evolution, Compact Stars, Close Binaries, Physical Properties of Black Holes, Alternative Theories of Gravity, Cosmology, Space Physics, Environmental Physics, and History of Astronomy. On the above, he has published more than a 100 papers in scientific journals and conferences proceedings. His current research interests included the physical and mathematical properties of realistic large-scale cosmological structures. |
