Biography: |
Kostas Tassis obtained his BSc in Physics at the University of Thessaloniki in 1999 and his PhD in Theoretical Astrophysics at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (USA) in 2005. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow at The University of Chicago (2005 - 2008) and at Jet Propulsion Laboratory (a NASA lab run by Caltech) (2008-2011). He was elected as an Assistant Professort at the University of Crete in 2011, and he joined the Department of Physics in the fall of 2012. Between 2011 and 2012 he was a Visiting Scientist at the Max-Planck Institute for Radioastronomy in Bonn, Germany. He was promoted to an Associate Professor in 2018 and to a Professor in 2023. |

State Space Grant, Cornell University (since 1996). Prof Terzian was born in Alexandria, Egypt from an Armenian father and a greek mother in 1939 and he passed away in Ithaca NY on November 25, 2019. Yervant Terzian
received the B.Sc. in Physics Mathematics from the
American University in Cairo (1960), the M.Sc. in
Astronomy (1963) and the Ph.D. in Astronomy (1965)
from the Indiana University, as well as four Honorary
D.Sc. from the Indiana University (1989), the Yerevan

Thessaloniki, Greece (1997) and the Union College,
New York (1999). He has been Research Associate,

He has been Honored at the Wall of Inspiration, Ithaca Science Center (2002) and with the Establishment of ‘The Yervant Terzian Cornell University Endowed Scholarships’ (1999). He has been Chairman, Committee on Astronomy in Greece for the 21st Century (1998), and Chairman, US Square Kilometer Array Consortium (2002- ). Distinguished Alumni Award, American University in Cairo (2005), Chairman, Ministry of Development Evaluation of Greek Research Institutes, Athens (2005). He is a member of the IAU, the International Scientific Radio Union; Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society; Astronomical Society of New York; Historical Astronomy Division, A.A.S.; Society for Scientific Exploration; Hel.A.S., Armenian Astronomical Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has published more than 230 scientific papers in refereed journals in conference proceedings and special volumes / books. He has also published six books on the Interstellar Ionized Hydrogen, on the Planetary Nebulae, on Flare Stars, on Cosmology and Astrophysics, on Active Galactic Nuclei And Related Phenomena and on Carl Sagans Universe.

Associate Professor of History and Philosophy of
Astronomy and Physical Science (retired). He was born
in Athens, Greece on the 12th of March, 1949. He got his B.Sc. in Mathematics from the Aristotle University of
Thessaloniki, Greece (1972) and his Ph.D. in Astrophysics from the Physics Department of the University of Athens, Greece (1983). He has worked as Laboratory Assistant, Lecturer and Assistant Professor at the Physics Department of the University of Athens. His scientific interests include History and Philosophy of Astronomy and Physical Sciences, Observational Astronomy and Astrophysics, Satellite spectrophotometry of Be and variable stars. He has
published 43 scientific papers in refereed journals (14 in Astrophysics and 29 in History and Philosophy of Astronomy), 18 papers in the British Sundial Society Bulletin (BSB) and North American Sundial Society Bulletin (NASS) and 147 papers in conference proceedings in Greece and abroad (65 in Astrophysics and 82 in History and Philosophy of Astronomy). In addition, he has exhibited a rich writing work with more than fourteen books in Physics and Astronomy, titled: On Stars and their myths–An Introduction in Uranography (1991), Measuring the Timeless-time– Time in Astronomy (1994), Astrology, Science or Religion? (1994), The Odyssey of Calendars vol. I. Looking for the roots of knowledge (1995), The Odyssey of Calendars vol. II. Astronomy and Tradition (1995), Straman-The tale of the Heavens (1997), The Universe I loved–An Introduction in Astrophysics, vol. I & II. (1998), In the trace of ICHTHYS–Astronomy, History, Philosophy (2000), Cosmology of the Mind–An Introduction in Cosmology (2003), The cycle of the Time–Astronomy and Mysterious religions (2004), The future of our Past-Science and New Civilization (2005), The dethronement of the Earth–The dispute between geocentric and heliocentric systems (2007), The Philosophy of Physics–From Cartesius to the Theory of Everything (2008). The book Cosmology of the Mind–An introduction in Cosmology (2003) was awarded with the “Aronis Prize” of the University of Athens (23 December, 2004). Also, he has written 6 Textbooks. For the last four years, in association with the Assistant Professor E. Danezis, he has been creator, presenter and scientific supervisor of the scientific television series “The Universe I Loved”, which already counts more than 100 episodes. He has been awarded the "Hellenic- American University prize" in the 1st International Science Film Festival, for this television series. He has been honored by the Hellenic Union of Physicists for all of his scientific and educational activities. He is a member of the International Astronomical Union (IAU), the European Astronomical Union (E.A.S.), the Hellenic Astronomical Society (Hel.A.S, founding member), the Hellenic Union of Physicists, the Hellenic Union of Mathematics, the Foundation of "Preserving Language Heritage" and the Foundation of “Historical Studies of Ancient Greek Mathematics. |

Biography: |
Director of Research (Retired) and Research Associate of in the Research Center for Astronomy and Applied Mathematics (RCAAM), Academy of Athens, Greece (since 1990). He was born in Sparta, Greece on the 4th of November, 1944. He obtained the B.Sc. in Physics from the University of Athens, Greece (1969), the M.Sc. in Meteorology (1972) and the Ph.D. in Solar Physics (1974) from the same University. He has been a Cadet Researcher at the National Research Foundation (1971-1972), Assistant Researcher (1972-1976) and Instructor of Research at the RCAAM of the Academy of Athens (1976-1990). In 1985 he was Docent of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He has spent one year as a visiting researcher in the Max Planck Institute in Munich/Germany, one year in the Space Research Laboratory Utrecht/ The Netherlands and several other laboratories for shorter periods. He was a tutor for five years in the Military School of Air Forces in both flying and engineering department, teaching space physics and space technology. His scientific interests include solar physics, near interplanetary physics and solar-terrestrial relations. He has published about 55 scientific papers in refereed journals and about 45 papers in conference proceedings and special volumes / books. He has also published a textbook on Space Physics and Technology for the cadets of the Air Force Academy of Greece. He is a member of the International Astronomical Union (IAU), American Geophysical Union (AGU), Hellenic Astronomical Society (Hel.A.S.), Hellenic Astronautical Union (HAU), Hellenic Physical Union, Scientific Program Committee (SPC) of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the High Level Working Group (HLWG) of the Group on Earth Observation (GEO) (since 2005). |
