Contopoulos George
Position: Faculty, Academy of Athens PhD: 1953, Department of Physics, University of Athens, Greece Thesis: On the dynamics of globular clusters Supervisor(s): Plakidis Stavros Biography: Academician, Emeritus Professor of the University of Athens and of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. He was born in Egio, Greece, on the 3rd of October, 1928. He received his B.Sc. in Mathematics from the University of Athens, Greece (1950) and his Ph.D. from the same University in 1953. He was elected Professor of Astronomy at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1957). In 1975 he was elected Professor of Astronomy at the University of Athens. He has served as Director of the Astronomical Institute of the National Observatory of Athens (1975- 1982), General Director of the National Observatory of Athens (1990-1993), Executive Director of the National Research Foundation (1978-79), vice- Chairman of the Greek National Astronomical Committee (1957-1983), National Representative at the NATO Scientific Committee and member of the research grant committee of NATO (1976-1983), member of the Astronomy Committee of the European Science Foundation (1976-83), member of the organizing Committee of the Astronomy Division of the European Physical Society (1976-1982) and member of the organizing committees of more than 30 international meetings. He has served as Visiting Professor at the Universities Yale (1962), Harvard (1968), MIT (1969), Cornell (1982), Chicago (1969, 1981), Maryland (1971, 1974, 1978), Florida (1985-1991), Florida State (1998) and Milan (1992,1998). He has been scientific associate at the Yerkes Observatory (1963), at the Institute for Advanced Study (1963), at the NASA (1963-67, 1971), at the Columbia University (1968) and at the European Southern Observatory (1976-88). His scientific interests are mainly centered on the Dynamical Astronomy, Relativity and Cosmology, Chaos, and the Celestial Mechanics, and he has published over 260 scientific papers on these subjects. He has also published or edited 14 scientific books, 4 textbooks and about 200 smaller articles. He is a member of the International Astronomical Union (he served as General Secretary of the IAU from 1973 to 1976), of the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS), of the Astronomische Gesellschaft, of the American Astronomical Society (AAS), of the European Astronomical Society and a founding member and two-terms Chairman (1994-1998) of the Hellenic Astronomical Society (Hel.A.S.). He has served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Astronomy & Astrophysics (1979-1993) and Associate Editor of the Celestial Mechanics and Dynamical Astronomy. He has been honoured with the Brouwer Prize of the AAS (1982), with his nomination as Associate of the RAS, as President of the Galaxy Commission of the IAU, and as Emeritus Chairman (2002) of Hel.A.S. He has been elected member of the Academia Europaea (1989), corresponding member of the Societe Royale de Liege (1971) and honorary doctor of the University of Chicago (1991) and of the University of Athens (2009). He has been elected Member of the Academy of Athens (1996) and currently he supervises its Research Center for Astronomy and Applied Mathematics.
Macris Constantin
Position: Researcher, Academy of Athens PhD: 1951, Department of Physics, University of Athens, Greece Thesis: On the granulation of the solar photosphere Supervisor(s): Plakidis Stavros - Lyot Bernard Biography: Dr. C. Macris was born in 1913 and he passed away in 2004. He obtained his undergrad degree in Physics from the University of Athens (1937) and his PhD in Solar Physics from the same University under the co-supervision of Prof. Plakidis and Bernard Lyot in 1951. He had worked at the Meudon Observatory, Paris, France, at the College of France and at the Arcetri Observatory, Italy. He published several papers on Solar Physics, planet physics, planet atmospheres etc, 4 textbooks and 2 books. He was a researcher at the National Observatory of Athens as well as at the Research Center for Astronomy and Applied Mathematics of the Academy of Athens, Greece. After his retirement he served as the director of the Astronomical Institute of the National Observatory of Athens (1983-1994). He had been honored with the Medal of the Polish Government on the 500 years of Copernicus (1973) and with the first award of the Empirician Foundation (1979).
Mavridis Lysimachos
Position: Faculty, University of Thessaloniki PhD: 1954, Department of Physics, University of Thessaloniki, Greece Thesis: On the mathematical expression of the annual air temperature and its fluctiations as a function of the solar activity Supervisor(s): Varopoulos Theodore - Xanthakis John Biography: He was born in Kavala, Greece, on the 16th of September, 1928 and passed away in 2011. He received the B.Sc. in Mathematics from the AUTH (1949) and the Ph.D. in Astronomy from the same University (1954). He worked as Assistant (1951-1955) and Chief Assistant (1955-1960) at the Laboratory of Astronomy of the same University and as Director of the Research and Computing Center of the Academy of Athens (1960-1966). He was elected Professor of Geodetic Astronomy and Director of the respective Laboratory, School of Engineering, AUTH (1964-1966). He has been elected twice Dean of the School of Engineering of the AUTH (1967-1968 and 1970-1973), Vice- Rector of the AUTH, Founding Rector of the Democritus University of Thrace (1974-78), President of the State Scholarship Foundation (IKY) (1976-1978) and General Director of Higher Education of the Greek Ministry of Education and Cults (1978-1979). He is the Founder and the Director of the Stephanion Observatory (since 1966). His research work refers to Astronomy, Astrophysics, Geodesy, Geophysics, Space Science and Applications and, later, to Initial and Continuing Education and Training with Distance Learning. He has published more than 110 scientific papers in refereed journals and more than 20 papers in conference proceedings and special volumes/books. He has been Editor or coeditor in four volumes (“Observational Aspects of Galactic Structure”, “Structure & Evolution of the Galaxy”, "Stars and the Milky Way System”, “Compendium in Astronomy” and “Earthquake Prediction and Instrumentation”). He has published (in Greek) many textbooks and notes for the University students on Astronomy, Geodesy and Error Theory. He has been named Honorary Doctor of the Democritus University of Thrace, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (1995) and Department of Civil Engineering (1996). He is corresponding Member of the Academy of Athens (since 1988) and of the Academy of Sciences of Heidelberg (since 1988) and an active member of the N.Y. Academy of Sciences (1995). He has been honored by the President of the Greek Republic with the “Officer of the Order of the Phoenix” (1977) and by the President of the F.R. of Germany with the “Grosser Verdienst- Kreuz des Verdienst- Ordens der Bundesrepublik Deutschland” (1988).  The Academy of Athens awarded him the “Excellence of the Sciences”, the highest distinction in this field (1986). He is a member of the International Astronomical Union (IAU- President or Member in many organizing Committees of Commissions 27, 33, 46, 37 and of the Special Study Group 1.78), of the Astronomische Gesellschaft, of the American Astronomical Society, of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, of the Royal Astronomical Society and of the Hellenic Astronomical Society. He has served as member in Greek National Committees (on Geodesy and Geophysics, on Astronomy and on Space Research). He has been a Member of the Group of U.N.
