He received the B.Sc. in Physics from the University of Athens, Greece (1971) and the Ph.D. in Astrophysics from the University of Maryland, U.S.A. (1977). He worked as senior assistant, Univ. of Athens (1978-1982), as a Lecturer (1982-1986) and Assistant Professor (1986 -1994) at the Department of Physics of the University of Athens, Greece, before elected to his present position. He has served as Director, Section of AstroGeophysics, Univ. of Ioannina (1997-1999) and as Director, Laboratory of Astrophysics, University of Ioannina (1995-1999 and 2005- 2007). His scientific interests are in Solar Physics, Solar magnetic fields and Radio Astronomy and Plasma Physics. He has served as Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Greece (1991-2009) and he has been twice elected Member of the European Parliament (1999-2005) and in 2007 he has been elected and serves as a Member of the Greek Parliament. He is a member of the International Astronomical Union (IAU), of the American Astronomical Society and its Solar Physics Division, the Société Française d’ Astronomie et d’ Astrophysique (SFSA) and the Hellenic Union of Physicists. He has served as a Board Member of the Solar Physics Section of the European Physical Society (1994-1999), of the Community of European Solar Radio Astronomers (1996-1999), as a Member of the Greek National Committee for Astronomy (1994-1999), as the National representative of Greece at the board of the Joint Organization for Solar Observations (JOSO, 1995-1999). He is married to Georgia Ladogianni and he has a son.
Antiochos Spiro

He was born in the island of Zakynthos, Greece on the 29th of October, 1949. He obtained his B.Sc. in Physics (Honors) from the McGill University (1970) and the Ph.D. in Applied Physics from the Stanford University (1976). He worked as Skylab Postdoctoral Fellow at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (10/1976 - 05/1978), as Research Associate at the Institute for Plasma Research, Stanford University (05/1978 - 04/1980), as Senior Research Associate at the Center for Space Science and Astrophysics, Stanford University (04/1980 - 06/1985),as Astrophysicist at the Space Science Division, Naval Research Laboratory (06/1985 - 12/2007), as Adjunct Professor at the Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences, University of Michigan (01/2003 - present) and as Astrophysicist, at the Heliophysics Division, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (01/2008 – present). His scientific interests include Solar physics and Plasma physics. He has over 150 publications in the refereed archival literature and over 3,000 citations. He is a member of the American Geophysical Union, the American Astronomical Society, the American Physical Society, and the International Astronomical Union. He was associate editor of JGR- Space Physics. He has served on many committees of professional societies and on advisory/review committees to NASA and the NSF, including Chair of the Solar Physics Division (SPD) of the American Astronomical Society, Chair of the NASA Solar Management and Operations Working Group, Chair of the SOLAR-B Science Working Group, Chair of the NSF committee that reviewed the High Altitude Observatory, Chair of the AURA committee that reviewed the director of the National Solar Observatory, and Chair (two terms) of the Targeted Research and Technology (TR&T) Steering Committee. He has served on the Space Studies Board of the National Research Council, on the Joint Science Definition Team for the NASA/ESA Orbiter/Sentinels mission, and on the Board of Advisors for the New Jersey Institute of Technology Center for Solar-Terrestrial Research. For his pioneering science contributions to solar physics, he was awarded the George Ellery Hale Prize in 2005, the highest honor given by the American Astronomical Society for work in solar physics. He was elected Fellow of the American Geophysical Union in 2005 and he was awarded the E. O. Hulburt award in 2006 by the Naval Research Laboratory, the highest honor given by the Laboratory for basic research. Nat. from the University of Heidelberg, Germany (1975). His scientific interests include the Observational and Geodetical Astronomy, the Geodesy and the Meteorology.
Christides Theodoros

He studied at the experimental high school of Thessaloniki (1952-1958) and obtained his BSc in Physics from the University of Thessaloniki. He worked originally as a high-school teacher (1965-1972) followed by a position of an assistant at the Dept. of Physics of the Univ. of Thessaloniki. There he obtained his PhD (1978) and taught courses of history and philosophy of science. He continued with postdoctoral studies in the History and Philosophy of Science at Chelsea College in London (1979-1980) at the Fondation Louis de Broglie in Paris (1987-1988). In 1998 he was elected Professor of history and philosophy of science at the Department of Primary Education of the Univ. of Thessaly. He retired and became emeritus in 2007.

He was born at Chania of Crete on the 17th of June, 1944. He obtained his B.Sc. in Physics from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1968) and the Ph.D. in Astronomy from the Karl-Rupprecht University, Heidelberg, Germany (1979). He has worked as Assistant (1971-79) and Chief-Assistant (1980-81) at the Laboratory of Geodetic Astronomy, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, as Guest Scientist (Doctorate level) at the Max-Planck Institut Fuer Astronomy, Heidelberg (1976-78), as Lecturer (1982-83) Assistant Professor (1984-1991) and Associate Professor (1992-1995) at the Department of Surveying and Geodesy, University of Thessaloniki, before elected at his current position (1996). His scientific interests include Astrophysics (Variable stars: M-C-S Mira Variable, Flare Stars; Photoelectric Photometry, Stellar spectroscopy) and Applied Geophysics (Variations of various physical parameters of near earth surface, atmosphere, Ionosphere in relation to tectonic activity). He has published more that 65 scientific papers in refereed journals and more than 55 papers in conference proceedings and special volumes / books. He was elected Director of the Department of Surveying and Geodesy (1994-1995). He has served as a Member of the Hellenic National Astronomical Committee (1983 and 1999-2001); Member of the Directive Board of HELAS (1994-1998); Secretary of IWG of EGS on Natural Hazard (responsible of Earthquake Hazard) (2000-2003); Secretary of IWG (now Division) of EGU on Natural Hazard (responsible of Earthquake Hazard) (2003-now); Member of the Scientific Editorial Board of the International Journal “Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences” (2001-now). Efstathiou George
Position: Faculty, University of Cambridge PhD: 1979, Dept. of Physics, Durham University, United Kingdom Thesis: On the rotation and clustering of galaxies Supervisor(s): Fong Richard Biography: George Petros Efstathiou FRS (born 2 September 1955) is a British astrophysicist of Cypriot descent who is Professor of Astrophysics and Director of the Kavli Institute for Cosmology at the University of Cambridge. He was previously Savilian Professor of Astronomy at the University of Oxford. Efstathiou was educated at Tottenham Grammar School which he left at age 16 and to which he returned as a lab technician. He then studied at Keble College, Oxford and the University of Durham where he was awarded a PhD in 1979. Efstathiou was a research assistant in the Astronomy Department of University of California Berkeley from 1979 to 1980, then moved to the Institute of Astronomy at the University of Cambridge, holding research fellowships at Kings College, Cambridge from 1980 to 1988. He was appointed as Savilian Professor of Astronomy at the University of Oxford in 1988 (a post that he held in conjunction with a fellowship at New College, Oxford) and served as Head of Astrophysics between 1988 and 1994. He returned to Cambridge in 1997 as Professor of Astrophysics (1909) and a Fellow of Kings College. Efstathiou served as Director of the Institute of Astronomy between 2004 and 2008. He became the first Director of the Kavli Institute for Cosmology in 2008.
Geroyannis Vassilis

He was born in Nea Ionia, Attica, Greece, on the 1st of January, 1951. He got his B.Sc. in Physics from the University of Patras (1973) and his Ph.D. in Physics from the same University (1978). He has served as Professor of Physics at the Technical Educational Institute (TEI) of Patras, and as a Lecturer, Assistant Professor, and Associate Professor at the Department of Physics, University of Patras, before he was elected in the present position. His scientific interests include Continuum Mechanics, Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics (with emphasis on MHD), and Theoretical Astrophysics (Stellar Mathematical Models with emphasis on Computational Astrophysics of White Dwarfs and Neutron Stars). He is a member of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and founding member of the Hellenic Astronomical Society (Hel.A.S.). He has served as a member of the Hel.A.S. Council (2004-2006) as well as a member of the Greek National Committee for Astronomy (2008-2010).
Haldoupis Christos

Born in Mendenitsa Lokris, Greece in 1947. He received the B.Sc. in Physics from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1970) and his Ph.D. from the University of Saskatchewan in Canada (1978). He is involved with the University of Crete since its beginning in 1978. He worked for two years (1979-81) as a Postdoctoral fellow in the Institute of Physics, University of Oslo, Norway, and as a reasearch associate (1984-85) in the Institute of Space and Atmospheric Studies, University of Saskatchewn, Canada. During the 20-year period from 1984 to 2004, he worked for a total of 3 years as a Research Scientist in the Max- Planck Institut fuer Aeronomie, Germany, for several months in the Universite de Paris VI (Pierre and Marie Curie), and for 6 months as a visiting professor in the Universite de Rennes I, France. Also he spent in 2005 four months as a visiting Professor in the Solar-Terrestrial Environment Laboratory, Nagoya University, Japan. In the Physics Department, University of Crete, he is responsible for the Laboratory of Ionospheric Physics. His scientific interests are in Upper Atmospheric and Ionospheric Physics: Ionospheric coherent and incoherent radio wave scattering; Ionospheric Plasma irregularities and instabilities; midlatitude sporadic E-layers, formation, plasma instabilities and electrodynamics; Midlatitude E/F region electrodynamic coupling; Coupling of Mesosphere Lower Thermosphere (MLT) dynamics (winds, gravity, tidal and planetary waves) with sporadic E layer plasma; VLF propagation and ionospheric modification during thunderstorms and Transient Luminous Events (sprites and elves). Geophysical data analysis techniques. Radar coherent backscatter experimentation. Digital Ionosonde, Geomagnetometric and VLF subionospheric measurements. Also he has done applied research on wind potential and energy Studies. He is author of more than 90 refereed papers, and has about 20 invited talks and 140 presentations in international conferences. He received The Max-Planck Institute Golden Pin award for Research in 1999. He served as a guest editor of the Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics and of Annales Geophsicae. He served as Associate Editor of the Radio Science Bulletin, and since 2006 he serves as associate Editor of the Journal of Geophysical Research - Space Physics. He obtained his BSc in Mathematics from the Univ. of Athens in 1968 and his PhD from the Univ. of Patras in 1976. He worked as an assistant at the Univ. of Patras and at the time of his death was a Professor at the Dept. of Informatics at the TEI of Athens.

He was a researcher at the Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics of the National Observatory of Athens from 1972 until his retirement in 2011. Dr. Kontizas served as the Director of the Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics (one of the two institutes which merged to form IAASARS) from 1994 until 1999. He held research appointments at the Observatoire de Haute Provence (France) in 1979, at Trieste Observatory (Italy) in 1980, and he was Senior Associate at NASA/GSFC (USA) in 1989-1990. He was a member of the Council of the Greek National Committee for Astronomy, 1994-1996 and 2001-2003 as well as Chairman during 1997-2001. Korakitis Romylos

He has worked as Lecturer, School of Rural and Surveying Engineers, National Technical University of Athens (1982 – 1991), as Assistant Professor (1991 – 2001) and as Associate Professor (2001-2008) at the same place before his election in the present position. Kylafis Nikolaos

He was born in Nea Avorani, Trihonidos, Greece, on the 1st of January, 1949. He received his B.Sc. in Physics from the University of Patras, Greece (1971), the M.Sc. in Physics from the University of Illinois at Chicago, U.S.A. (1973) and the Ph.D. in Astrophysics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, U.S.A. (1978). He has worked as Research Associate, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, (01 – 08/1979) and as Research Fellow, Caltech, (09/1979 – 08/1981). He became Member of the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (09/1981 – 06/1984), Assistant Professor at Columbia University (07/1984 – 06/1985), Assistant Professor (1985 –1989) Associate Professor (1989 – 1997) and Professor (1997-2016) at the University of Crete, Greece. He retired in 2016 and became Emeritus Professor. Since 1989 he is also a Researcher at the Foundation for Research and Technology, Crete, Greece. His scientific interests include X-ray Astronomy (Accretion onto White Dwarfs, Neutron stars, and Black Holes), Optical / Infrared Astronomy (galaxies, Interstellar Medium) and Radio Astronomy (Masers, polarization) and he has published more than 48 scientific papers in refereed journals and the textbook “Electromagnetism” (in Greek), commissioned by the Hellenic Open University. He has been elected and served as Associate Chairman (1997 – 1999) and Chairman (1999 – 2003) of the Physics Department, University of Crete, Greece. He served as Chairman of the Department of Physics from 1999 to 2003, as well as Dean of the School of Sciences from September 2008 to May 2013. From 2012 to 2016 he was a member of the Council of the University of Crete.
Matsakis Demetrios
Position: Researcher, U.S. Naval Observatory PhD: 1978, Dept. of Astronomy, University of California, Berkeley, USA Thesis: An interferometric and multi-transitional study of the orion methanol masers. Supervisor(s): Townes Charles Biography: He was born in Saint Louis, and he always loved and respected his Greek Heritage (Karpathos island). He received his B.Sc. degree in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his Ph.D. from the University of California in Berkeley. After graduating, he returned to Washington and participated in a project measuring the Earth’s rotation. He joined the Naval Observatory team in 1990, and seven years later, he became director of the Time Service Department. His scientific interests include also Radio Astronomy and Planetary Sciences. He is a member of the American Astronomical Society and of the International Astronomical Union (I.A.U.).
Mavraganis Anastasios

He was born in Corinth, Greece, on the 12th of July, 1947. He received the B.Sc. in Mathematics from the University of Athens, Greece (1971) and the Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Patras, Greece (1975). He worked as a researcher at this University (1975-77), as Senior Assistant (1978-1982), Lector (1982-1985), Assistant Professor (1985-1993) and Associate Professor (1993 – 2009) of the former General Department of the National Technical University of Athens. Since 1978 he is also Professor at the School of Technical Education for Army officers. His scientific interests include Celestial Dynamics, Electrodynamics, the Dynamics of the Absolute Solid and the Dynamics of Complex Solid Systems and he has published more than 100 papers on these subjects. He has also published three textbooks on the “Stability of the Dynamical Systems”, the “Absolute Solid” and “Analytical Dynamics”. He has close scientific collaboration with the University of Liverpool (U.K.) and he has worked there as a Research Fellow.
Mavromichalaki Helen

She was born in Egion, Achaias, Greece and obtained her B.Sc. in Physics (1970), the M.Sc. in Meteorology (1976) and the Ph.D. in Physics (1978) from the University of Athens, Greece. She worked as an assistant at the Nuclear Physics Laboratory (1970-82) and as Lecturer (1982) and Assistant Professor (1985) at the same University. She is a scientific collaborator (since 1979) of the Research Center of Astronomy and Applied Mathematics of the Academy of Athens. She has written one textbook on “Cosmic Rays” and co-authored two other textbooks on “Nuclear Physics” and “Atomic Physics”. She is the Head of the Cosmic Ray Group of Athens University from 1982 of undergraduate and graduate students as well as of post graduate and scientific researchers. Her scientific interests include Galactic and Solar Cosmic ray Physics, Magnetospheric Physics, Space Physics, Space Weather monitoring by cosmic rays, Neutron Monitors and satellite data analysis. She is Scientific Responsible of the Installation and Operation of the Athens Neutron Monitor Station in real-time (2000-) and Head of the Athens Neutron Monitor Data Processing (ANMODAP) Center (2003-today), an Alert system providing a warning signal worldwide in real-time for GLE events is operated since 2003.
Mertzanidis Constantinos

He obtained his B.Sc. in Physics from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece (1968), an M.Sc. in Meteorology from the University of Athens, Greece (1972) and a second M.Sc. in Radioelectrology from the University of Thessaloniki (1974).
