The Hellenic Astronomical Society obtained an online presence on December 10, 1996. Its
web server was initially located at the Section of Astrophysics, Astronomy and Mechanics at the
Department of Physics of the University of Thessaloniki. V. Charmandaris created the first pages and
has been the main curator ever since.
As of December 20, 2012 the server of the Society is hosted at
the Department of Physics of the
University of Crete.
To facilitate access to the web site for users who lived outside
Greece, for the first 10 years a mirror server had been set up in Cambridge, Massachusetts - U.S.A., using
resources which were kindly provided by the
Hellenic Resources Institute. The Society is grateful for this service, which is no longer
necessary given the stability and increased bandwidth available in Greece over the past several years.
In March 2007 the helas.gr domain name was reserved and a major "facelift" of the webpages
took place. These changes included the development of a mySQL database for the members and the electronic newsletters
of the Society along with a complete bilingual (english and greek) text for the whole server.
