------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. SHORT NEWS
-------------
The web server of AUTH, which hosts the web pages of Hel.A.S., is back
online.
2. Hel.A.S. PRIZE FOR THE BEST PH.D. IN 1998
-------------------------------------------
The Council of Hel.A.S., in its last meeting on Nov. 13, decided to
establish a
HELLENIC ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY PRIZE
for the best Ph.D. in Astronomy. The prize is foreseen to be granted
annually and will cover one calendar year. The selection procedure
and the amount of money connected to the prize will be decided yearly
by the Council of Hel.A.S. The prize will be awarded to active members
of the Society, which have successfuly defended their Ph.D. thesis
during the calendar year of the award.
For 1998, the Council of Hel.A.S. has decided to offer the sum of
100.000 drx.
The recipient will be selected by the Council. Please note that this
is an award. It is not a scholarship. Therefore no "application" is
involved. All members of the Society and other colleagues (Ph.D.
supevisors in particular) are strongly encouraged to bring to the
attention of the Council of Hel.A.S. any candidates of this year's
prize, by sending details to the Secretary of Hel.A.S., Dr. H. Varvoglis
(varvogli@astro.auth.gr). Full address can be found in the "Members'
Directory of the Society: http://www.astro.auth.gr/elaset. The Secretary
can also provide further details for the prize.
3. ANNUAL FEES FOR EAS and 1998 FEES for Hel.A.S.
-------------------------------------------------
Due to a weak response to the request by the Treasurer of Hel.A.S. (only
three members expressed their wish to pay the EAS fees through our
Society), the annual contribution of Greek astronomers to EAS should be
paid directly to the Treasurer of EAS.
As a consequence of a recent Council resolution, the annual Hel.A.S.
contribution for new Members of the Society, which are elected
during the second half of a calendar year, is waived.
4. "ASTRONOMY 2000+: GREEK PROSPECTS FOR THE 21st CENTURY"
----------------------------------------------------------
The ASTRONOMY 2000+ Workshop held at Penteli on Nov. 12 and 13 was a
great success. About 100 Greek asronomers vividly discussed the
infrastructure, the resources and the prospects of Astronomy in
Greece, during a well organized meeting. Updated information on the
meeting will appear in the web site of the Greek National Committee
for Astronomy:
http://www.astro.noa.gr/gnca
5. JOB OPENINGS
