1. SHORT NEWS

We would like to congratulate Dr. Despina Hatzidimitriou who was recently promoted to an Associate Professor at the Department of Physics of the University of Crete We would like to congratulate Dr. Paul Kalas who recently commenced his appointment as Assistant Adjunct Professor at the University of California, Berkeley (USA).

2. THE NEW COUNCIL OF HEL.A.S.

The first meeting of the new Governing Council of Hel.A.S. took place on October 8 2006 under the presidency of Prof. Tsinganos. Kostas Kokkotas was appointed vice-president of the Society, Vassilis Charmandaris was appointed as the Secretary of the Society and Apostolos Mastichiadis became the new Treasurer. Profs. Kokkotas and Charmandaris also continued in their corresponding positions as the editors of Hipparchos and the monthly electronic newsletter of the Society.

3. ADDRESSES OF NEW MEMBERS OF HEL.A.S.

The contact details of the new members of Hel.A.S. have been included in the online directory of the Society. All members are requested to check their records to ensure that the information is up to date. 4. JOB OPENINGS

A new tenure-track position at the level of "Assistant Professor" or "Lecturer" in the field of "Astrophysics with emphasis on Plasma Astrophysics of the Sun and the Interplanetary Medium" has been opened at the Department of Physics of the University of Ioannina. The deadline for submission of applications is December 9, 2006. Interested applicants may contact the Secretariat of the Physics Department: telephone 26510-97192 (Mrs Ourania Gortzi). The Section of Astrophysics, Astronomy, and Mechanics at the Dept. of Physics of the University of Athens is participating in the new Astronomy Research and Training Network (RTN) named "ELSA". The team leader is Prof. Mairy Kontizas and the goal of the project is the preparation of the European Astronomical community for the GAIA space mission of ESA. A number of postdoctoral and PhD positions funded by the European Union will become available as part of this RTN, among which one PhD position will be available in Athens. 5. FULBRIGHT FELLOWSHIPS

The Fulbright Foundation in Greece is offering the possibility of fellowships in the United States for the 2006-2007 academic year. The fellowships have a duration of 3 months and are addressed to greek university professors and researchers with at least 5 years of research experience after their PhD. 6. PHD POSITIONS AT IMPRS

the International Max-Planck Research School on Astrophysics (IMPRS) is soliciting applications for its PhD program. Located in the beautiful Munich-Garching area in southern Bavaria (Germany), the school offers a unique environment for graduate students due to the presence of four internationally renowned institutes which form the school: * The Max-Planck Institute for extraterrestrial Physics (MPE) * The Observatory of the University of Munich (LMU/USM) * The Max-Planck Institute for Astrophysics (MPA) * The European Southern Observatory (ESO) Applications for the program are open to students from all countries. 7. ASTRONET SYMPOSIUM

The ASTRONET effort has been initiated by a group of European funding Agencies in order to establish a comprehensive long-term planning for the development of European astronomy. It has been selected and is financially supported by the European Commission under its FP6 program. The overall objective is to consolidate and reinforce the highly competitive position that European astronomy has attained at the beginning of this 21st Century. Integral to ASTRONET needs is to establish a common Science Vision for the next 20 years, followed by a detailed Infrastructure Roadmap to attain the scientific goals. A Symposium on "future scientific challenges in Astronomy" will take place on January 23-25, 2007, Poitiers, France and it is aimed at getting precious feedback from the astronomical Community at large to refine and consolidate the scientific goals of European Astronomy for the next two decades. The Symposium programme features parallel sessions between the enlarged four ASTRONET science panels: each participant is urged to enlist on one Panel (with if possible a 2nd choice that could be exercised in case of a too uneven distribution) when registering for the event. Following the Symposium, the ASTRONET Science Panels will complete their task, delivering the 'Science Vision' to the European Commission by April 2007. This in turn will be a major input for the Infrastructure Roadmap Panels that are starting their work end of 2006. The application deadline for the Symposium is December 5, 2007.
