1. SHORT NEWS

The Council of the Hel.A.S. would like to wish to all its members and their families a Happy, Healthy and Productive NEW YEAR 2008.

Ms. Magda-Evgenia Gkini recently moved from the graduate program of the Univ. of Athens to commence her PhD studies at the Observatoire de Paris (France).

Dr. Padelis Papadopoulos recently moved from ETH Zurich (Switzerland) to a research associate position at the University of Bonn (Germany) to work on projects related to Herschel/APEX and early science with ALMA.

We would like to congratulate Dr. Spiros Patsourakos who was recently elected to the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics of the University of Ioannina.

 
2. MEETING OF THE GOVERNING COUNCIL OF HEL.A.S.

On December 4th 2007 the Governing Council (GC) of HelAS held via teleconference a meeting to discuss various issues related to the organizational matters as well as upcoming activities of the Society. All members are strongly encouraged to read the minutes of this GC meeting which are available online at:

During the meeting it was decided that the next (26th) General Assembly (GA) of Society will take place on Friday June 20th 2008 at the Department of Physics of the University of Athens. During this GA the new Governing Council of the Society for the 2008-2010 term will be elected. By the end of January 2008 all Members will have received by post the official announcement regarding the elections. According to Article 29 of the Constitution all ordinary members of the Society who have no outstanding membership fees may nominate themselves or other ordinary members for the Council. The nominations have to be returned to the Secretary of the Society by February 29th 2008. The call for nominations as well as the necessary forms are also available online at the "News & Events" section of the web pages of the Society. More information on the General Assembly and the elections will become available in future newsletters.

 
3. MEMBERS OF HEL.A.S. ELECTED IN IAA

We would like to congratulate two members of Hel.A.S., Prof. Emmanuel Sarris and Dr. Ioannis Daglis, who were recently elected in the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) as Member and Corresponding Member respectively.

IAA is an independent non-governmental organization, with its headquarters in Paris, France. The current President of IAA is Dr. Edward C. Stone, former director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and currently professor at Caltech and director of its Space Radiation Laboratory. The aims of IAA are: foster the development of astronautics for peaceful purposes; recognize individuals who have distinguished themselves in a related branch of science or technology; provide a program through which members may contribute to international endeavours; cooperation in the advancement of aerospace science.

 
4. JOB OPENING

There is an opening for a position of Researcher D' in the Research Center for Astronomy and Applied Mathematics of the Academy of Athens under the area of "Topology of the Universe and the Cosmic Microwave Background". 5. PH.D. POSITION ON THEORETICAL ASTROPHYSICS

There is an opening for a PhD student to work on modeling high energy emission processes relevant to GLAST, NASA's soon to be launched Gamma-ray observatory. This thesis project is in the context of a recently awarded NASA theory grant (PI M. Georganopoulos at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, CoIs D. Kazanas at NASA/Goddard and E. Perlman at Florida Institute of Technology). The successful applicant will develop theoretical models and numerical simulations that will eventually become publicly available to the high energy observing community, and is expected to be closely connected to the GLAST team at Goddard Space Flight Center (Maryland, USA).   1. Temporary Teaching Position in Ioannina
1. TEMPORARY TEACHING POSITION IN IOANNINA

A new temporary teaching position (P.D. 407) in Astronomy has become available for the Spring semester of academic year 2007-2008 at the Department of Physics of the University of Ioannina. The successful candidate is expected to teach the Department's elective courses on 'Observational Astrophysics' and 'Galaxies - Cosmology'. The deadline for submission of letters of intent is February 4, 2008.
