3. AUGUST ACTIVITIES FOR THE IYA2009

In this news-item we present all activities related to the International Year of Astronomy which, to our knowledge, are scheduled in Greece this coming month. If you wish to have your IYA2009 planned activities included in this mailing please inform the Editor of the e-newsletter.

For August 2009 the following events are planned:

  • 6th of August - Talk of Prof. P. Niarchos (Univ. of Athens) entitled "The search for extrasolar planets", at the ancient Olympia.
  • 19th of Austust - Talk of Dr. A. Coustenis (Observatoire de Paris, France) entitled "The exploration of Titan and the Saturnian system", at the city of Heraklion.

More details about the events mentioned above, as well as all upcoming activities for the IYA 2009 which will take place in Greece under the auspices of Hel.A.S., are available at:

4. ESA ANNOUNCEMENTS OF OPPORTUNITY

ESA's Directorate of Human Spaceflight has released a set of three coordinated Announcements of Opportunity. The announcements cover life sciences research on the International Space Station (ISS), or using bed rest as a spaceflight analogue or sounding rockets, as well as physical sciences using the ISS and/or sounding rockets. The deadline for submitting proposals is 14 September 2009. More information is available at:

ESA also solicits proposals for the provision of a coronagraph for the PROBA 3 mission. This Announcement of Opportunity (AO) is open to scientists from the Member States of ESA and other communities with which reciprocity or specific agreements exist. The deadline for receipt of proposals is 12 noon CEST on 15 September 2009. More information is available at:

5. SAAS-FEE COURSE: ASTROPHYSICS AT VERY HIGH ENERGIES

The 40th "Saas-Fee Advanced Course" of the Swiss Society for Astrophysics and Astronomy (SSAA) will be held from Monday, 15 March to Saturday, 20 March 2010 in Les Diablerets, in the Swiss Alps. This course has taken place annually since 1971, sponsored every year by the Swiss Academy of Sciences and this year it will be devoted to "Astrophysics at Very-High Energies". The course will review the state of knowledge, open questions and forecasts in the field of high and very-high energy gamma-ray astrophysics, a field that has encountered a revolution in the last years with the success of Cherenkov Astronomy and more recently with the launch of NASA's Fermi mission. Impact of gamma-ray observations on our knowledge of particle acceleration in galactic and extragalactic sources will be reviewed. Prospects for dark matter detection and from the multi-messengers approaches will be covered as well. The registration deadline is December 15 2009. More information is available at:
